Hear about Richard Noble's 1000mph jet car - 10 April - Hawkwell
The VRT are delighted to offer tickets to the public for the following event:
World Land Speed Record Breaker to speak at AGM
We are very pleased to welcome world land speed record breaker Richard Noble OBE as guest speaker at our Annual General Meeting on Saturday 10 April. The meeting takes place at our usual venue: Hawkwell Village Hall, Hawkwell, Essex SS4 4EH.
In 1983 Richard was successful in taking the world land speed back from the Americans when he drove Thrust 2, powered by a Rolls Royce Avon jet engine, at over 633mph over the Black Rock desert, Nevada. Thanks to Richard, Britain has held the record ever since as continues to push for ever greater speeds. In 1997 Richard and his team took the incredible ThrustSSC to Black Rock to set a new record of 763mph, this time with RAF fighter pilot Squadron Leader Andy Green at the controls. Weighing more than 10 tons and powered by two Rolls Royce Spey engines, ThrustSSC was the first ever car to travel faster than the speed of sound.
After a brief foray into commuter aviation with the Farnborough F1 aircraft, the urge for speed found again found Richard setting up a new team to build a new car to go for the next milestone – 1000mph. Bloodhound SSC will again Andy Green at the controls with power this time coming from an EJ200 jet engine (the same engine that powers the Eurofighter Typhoon) plus a solid fuel rocket motor. The plan is that the EJ200 will accelerate Bloodhound SSC before the rocket motor takes over and propels the car, and Andy, through and beyond the 1000mph ‘barrier’.
To all of us who like taking vehicles with large jet engines in them and thumping them along the ground, Richard Noble is a hero; a man prepared to sacrifice a great deal for what he loves. His enthusiasm, ingenuity and inspiration hark back to a different era when Britain held nearly all world records associated with speed. Richard will be telling us all about the Bloodhound SSC project and we are thrilled that he is coming to see us down in Southend.
The doors will open at 12 noon and refreshments will be available. The Annual General Meeting will start at 1.00 p.m. and we anticipate that Richard will begin speaking at around 2.15 p.m.
TICKETS MUST BE PURCHASED IN ADVANCE.
Tickets are available for a minimum donation of £5 each exclusively from the trust’s website at www.tickets.avrovulcan.com
