Default Possibly up for sale

The heating system in my house is fooked and I'm looking at having to fork out £2500 to have a combi and rads installed so the scoob may have to go.

The car:

1996 JDM V2 STI

Engine rebuilt 15/10/07 with the following:
New centre thrust crank with modified oil feed
Uprated mains and bigends
Roger Clark uprated oil pump
STI spec conrods and ring set
Heavy duty head gaskets
valves reground
heads refaced
new seals and gaskets
Cambelt

Serviced by myself 24/01/10 comprising of:

sparkplugs (NGK Platinums)
Oil filter
Millers 10/40 Synthetic oil
Fuel filter
Adjustable fuel pressure regulator fitted

Mods:

Hayward and Scott downpipe
Hayward and Scott Centre decat
Hayward and Scott Jap spec back box
HKS Air/fuel adjuster
Front mount intercooler
Induction kit

Newage alloys sprayed black with red reflective trim (new set will be provided)

Cat 1 alarm/immobiliser

Bad points:

2 car park dings on drivers door (both about the size of a 5p)
front tyres need replacing soon
N/S door mirror a little loose
STI stitching on front seats a little faded
Red wrinkle paint on inlet manifold has mostly flaked away but a brand new tin of red wrinkle spray will be provided
Skirts badly painted and need respraying
paint flaked off O/S door mirror (about size of a 10p)

Stereo system will not be sold with the car

I won't accept less than £4500

Thanks Stu

We've got a guy who came in highly recommended by the heating engineer who usually services our warm air system and he's coming tomorrow to give an estimate and we'll see what happens

Be a shame to see it go. But as already said needs must.

There's a place in Billericay that does a complete central heating kit for about £695 plus the vat. They're always advertising in the paper. Might be a cheaper way to go.

Been told that I'm not selling the scoob and we'll work something out -though might be the last resort.

We got one quote - £3800 am not impressed, waiting for another quote to come through and we're trying another firm tomorrow.

Next option is a trip to screw fix and I'll fit the rads myself and get a gas safe engineer to do the boiler. Just worked out that we need 10 rads which will cost £420, going to work out roughly what is needed tonight and use that as a guide of these quotes we're getting

Paul, why are you looking at changing the complete system?
And I assume you are looking to change to a combi system?

I'm adding in a couple of rads at the moment and found Wickes to be cheaper.

£3800 is a bit steep. Do you really need to change out all the rads though?

The simplest system to install is a combi, no tanks etc.
One of the biggest issues is the time to plumb the heating system, more time = more cost. Also the time to remove the old system, obviously if you can do this it will significantly save the engineers time and you money.
Assuming all the supplies are in the same location as the boiler, a competent Gas engineer will be able to install the boiler in a day.
With a little bit of prep this is really not difficult, especially if you use plastic pipework under the floor (I prefer to use copper above the floor as it is straiter), very quick to joint, no flame required, can come in a large 30m roll - so you can pull the pipe through like a cable. We use John Guest Speedfit.

Screwfix is good for cost of the copper, fittings, etc. but I would gets some quotes from a few plumbers merchants for the boiler and rads

hope this helps

Thanks for the info mate

Where I want to put the combi is in the back room where the electric and gas services are, so just a case of routing the water through.
Also this would provide the need to mount the condensing boiler on an external wall and is close to a drain so should cover the legal regs.

Funnily enough, I've just gone through the screwfix catalogue and priced 9 rads, 1 towel rail, fitting packs, timer, thermostat, thermostatic valves etc and came to £720 (all copper solder joints) but excludes 15 and 22mm pipe and the combi. The pipes has POA in the catalogue and have been told by 4 different fitters to steer clear of French and Italian made boilers so this rules Screwfix out so realistically it's going to cost in the region of £1600 for parts.
My mum's other half is a builder so between us, I don't think it will be a problem installing it barring the boiler side - which we'll get a Gas Safe engineer to finish it off

£400 scrappage scheme - looked briefly into this monday night and as we're not on working tax or any kind of benefits I don't think we're covered. I could be wrong though.

Thanks for the info!

£3800 isn't far off tbh, BG would be more IRO £5k. I paid c.£3k in 2005 for a top combi with back tank, quality rads with thermos on each and a load of pipe work, removal, disposal, install outside tap at front for the detailing.

I did look at the wickes rads and I know we have to cut our cloth accordingly but tbh I wasn't impressed with the wickes stuff. One thing I did notice was when I bought some copper pipe recently it's much cheaper retail from a B'merchant than it is for the plumber to supply.

Thanks for the info!
The boiler scrapage scheme was only announced last year, to qualify your boiler must be over 15 years old and of a certain poor energy rating. You do not need to be on benefits for this. There are also grants available for those that are on benefits under the warm front scheme.

A quick search for boiler scrappage and look for a gov site or energy saving trust, will give the full details.
