Default Can I ask Frayz :o)

I have a question for you (or for anyone that knows - but I KNOW that Frayz will )
I have a wagon MY95 imp, and it has a really bad gear ratio - I think thats the wording I want anyway. Basically in 5th gear its sitting at
3krpm and only doing about 60mph - is that normal?
Gooners saloon can go at about 70mph+ before getting to 3k and I've/we've been told in the past that the 3k marker is where best fuel consumption is. So I'm thinking that I either don't go above 60mph or just throw loads of money to BP???
Can I do anything about this? can it be changed - what needs to be done?

BP....

YUK... most scoobies run like crap on BP ultimate...

in answer to you question, there are about 10 or so different Gear boxes that Subaru used on the classics, with varying ratio's, so I suspect you have one of the closer ratio boxes installed, better for acceleration

Best way is to check the transmission code on the VIN plate...

As Mark says above, there's loads of different gearbox ratios for various different Subaru's.

My 2002 WRX done 80mph at 3k revs on it's original box.
It now does 70mph at 3k revs on a P1 box.

Best bet is to swap the keys with Gooner's car

LOL - thats funny - however, Gooner is still sulking that I've nabbed the wagon as originally he bought it for himself!! Which, I felt was quite selfish, considering he already had the saloon - and he wanted to use it for WORK!! OMG, as if you could use such a beauty for work

So, I nabbed it - I did try bargaining for the saloon - but he was having none of that. So tough - I got the wagon - he keeps the saloon

(as for BP - I don't actually use BP - we use tesco ultimate, which is what his was mapped to?)

The guys have pretty much answered your question, check out the transmission code on the vin, that is if its still the original box. A taller box could be fitted but id ask myself how much of an issue it really is.

Do you really need the expense of swapping boxes just to try and gain a few MPG?

Its not a HUGE problem, but the car just feels like it needs another gear! Also, I'm a bit heavy footed and I don't want a REALLY juicy car - gooners saloon is OK, but I don't want the wagon to be highly expensive to run!

And (before its said), yes I know that if you own a subaru you're likely to always be shelling out one way or another, as they're not "cheap" cars, but I do like it to be relatively economical

Thanks for the input though - guess I'll give it some thought - any suggestions on a ball park figure for changing it?

Its going to take many many tanks of fuel (probabaly hundreds of them) to recoup your costs of changing gearbox and maybe diff etc

if you want to save petrol, (derrr..) dont buy a subaru.

it also helps to stay off boost when cruising (60/70/80) - you choose.

edited to say, i have tried driving like miss daisy and i only better the tank range by about 10/20 miles or so, so stig mode is back on!!

For the lazy amongst us, transmission chart link below.

The SPDA - Transmission Chart

To find out your one, check out the code on the metal plate on the suspension turret (passenger side), assuming it had the original box anyway.

Was a pain in my MY03 WRX too, always felt like it needed to shift up for cruisin'. The MY06 6 Speed is 2.5k+ @ 80mph . At least you will always be in the power band so you can Rag the Wagooner
