Default How to get a bugeye WRX to 300bhp?!

Hi peeps,

A quick question which I am sure has been asked a million times before.

I have an 02 bugeye WRX...currently the only engine related mod I have installed is an Afterburner Vortex back box, but I am quite disappointed with the power. The car feels drastically underpowered at times, but fairly good on other days! I am hoping my impending major service @ Xtreme will make the car feel sharper anyhow.

Anyway, the question...I will be happy to stop modding when I get to 300bhp. What in your experiences would be the best and most cost-sensitive way of achieving this?

I was thinking of going fully decat, uprated turbo, induction kit perhaps and a live re-map?

Thoughts and advice would be appreciated!

Go for 280bhp much more achievable mate.

View my scooby for Mocom mods on MY03 WRX, 235 at the wheels, and between 273 and 294BHP, depending on which pub you want to brag in

Seriously though , have a look at the MY03 mods, with remap you will be very happy indeed. My WRX was fantastic and as good as my current STi before that too was modified

Id get the parts from an STi, these are usually reasonably priced and readily available.

Panel filter with cold air feed or induction kit
STI VF30 turbocharger
Full decat inc uppipe on the WRX
V7 onwards STI intercooler
550cc injectors (STI Pinks)
Warlboro 255 fuel pump
Mocom Racing Remap.

That little lot will take you comfortably to about 320+ bhp with great response, torque and drivability.

Much more than that and a larger turbo will be required ie: TD0516g however now you will be pushing the limits of the stock WRX 5 speed box.

Also as you only have a vortex backbox, id be inclined to sell the vortex and get a decent 3" system. The 3" pipe will allow your car to make power with less effort.

Hope that helps.

Really helpful as always Frayz

Do you have a ball-park figure for each of these items?

STI VF30 turbocharger Approx £300 for a good SH item
Full decat inc uppipe on the WRX Full 3" decat £450 / Uppipe £100
V7 onwards STI intercooler £250
550cc injectors (STI Pinks) £200
Warlboro 255 fuel pump £90
Mocom Racing Remap. £450

All prices are approx, but there are some deals to be had on good S/H items out there,

Getting on for £2.5k if the pipes are wrapped and with fitting ?

Ask Nate about Intercoolers he sourced a good cheap STi one and keep your eye on the SNet adds for the injectors, there have been a few sets for sale recently.

Any chance I can retain the vortex and change the remaining length up to the manifold whilst still seeing good power increases? I really like the look and sound of the vortex!

I got my STi intercooler for £165 delivered , from a breakers called 'cit-ren' , who primarily break citreon's and renault's , and they do a great deal on things, they sell through Ebay, but if you contact them directly, the prices work out very good

They haven't got much on Ebay Subaru related at the moment, but are worth a call , this is their Ebay shop :- eBay UK Shop - CIT-REN LTD: LIGHTING, STARTERS ALTERNATORS, PANELS , and a quick Google cam eup with their phone number 01508 558655 .

Cit-Ren Salvage

At the same time as getting the intercooler, I also got a Blobeye power steering pump, as the pulleys were easier to change on a blobeye pump, than a bugeye pump

Trouble is mate your vortex is only 2.5" so whatever you bolt up to it will eventually be exiting through a 2.5" dai pipe.

Dont get me wrong its not an absolute must have for the 3" system but it is worthwhile doing now, as i feell you'll only end up changing at a later date.

Ive had 4 systems on my car now before i found something im happy with lol
