lol @ Zak charging £25 - hopefully you wont need it, but it would be a shame for a small fire to grow into something that wrecks the car for the sake of not having one

Serious is dependant on how much boost can be run through it but based on what I know is in place it would begin with a 4

 

Mines gonna start with a 1 when it comes back

 

shame you will never use it in a fitting place

 

So what determines what amount of boost you can run?

Back to frayz's thread, the spread of power that he will be able to get on this will be stunning - on top of thee amazing attention to detail and finishing touches that he puts in. One hell of a car in my opinion. :

Dont worry its not a complete map change, just altering some of the load scales. Zak will be on your car 99% of the time.

The amount of boost will depend on our cylinder pressures and where we start to see det. The next thing that will hold us back will be the headers, we decided to use a ported OEM set before running tubular ones just to find their limitations. They will then be swapped out for a set of genuine equal length items.

I think its gonna be really tough to crack the magic 400bhp on the 20g, however Andy Forrest saw 440bhp with methanol. Mine will also have a methanol map. Wether we run methanol in it all the time is yet to be seen but we shall see.

Another possible issue will be the clamping load on the cylider heads with the increase in boost, but once again we shall see.

Im really hoping the engine will be taken out this winter anyway...

Frayz - car sounds like it's going to be awesome mate. i've got my hayward and scott tublar headers (wrapped) if you wanted to do any testing with them. it'll be a while before i have any time to get them on the ra.

 

Well i dunno how much different it will be in all honesty. It will be nice just to get her back on the road.
Another limiting factor will be the restriction of the intercooler under high boost. This will be swapped out for a FMIC in the near future.

i know what i was like while i waited to find another impreza and i don't think that was a long as you've had to wait to get your brakes sorted out. so know how you must be feeling.

what fmic will you go for? they can make the car quite "laggy" can't they?

let me know if you want to give the headers a go. they make the sound of the car something different entirely.

i bet you'll be out there for days detailing it when you get it back. this bufty bug bites harder than the the modding bug! just took delivery of some more zymol stuff. HD cleanse is great stuff to work with and the zymol waxes seem to go so far. i'd say the pot that i've got will last me years!

As for a FMIC, we looked at getting people like Pro-Alloy to make us a bespoke unit to our specs but the time and development we would have to put in, we might only gain 5% or so efficiency over the APS DR725.

It would cost us more than the APS item too, which isnt so much a problem but for the gain vs outlay it wasnt worth doing. Yes on a laptop a FMIC might see you some lag but a properly designed unit with high flow rates will barely notice a difference out on the road. Yes you have a larger volume to fill but much less restiction than the OEM item. This helps in 2 ways... firstly it keeps the pressure drop very low and secondly, the harder the air has to fight to get through the core etc the hotter it gets. So having a free flowing core will reduce the temps even more. Couple this with a super efficient core and you will have some awesome charge temps.

IMO the STi intercooler has a core thats so efficient that it masks the fact that its restrictive on its inlet. This restriction will in turn heat the charge but the core then cools it again. If i could have a FMIC made with the same tube/fin core of the OEM STi ietm then it would be an awesome cooler.

Another problem with the stock cooler under very high boost applications is the blowing off of the end tanks, theyre crimped in place, not welded. This can prove a possible issue, but i think will will have a FMIC before we come to that limitation.

Sure the STi cooler will make over 400bhp, but with an efficient FMIC the car will make this power much easier.

 

with the amount of rain around at the moment, you might only have chance of a "spash and dash"

must admit, if i was buying my headers again, i'd go for the gt spec ceramic coated ones. the only reason why i went with the h&s items is i got a very good deal on the group buy i sorted out the other year.

i guess using the core of the sti unit and getting some end tanks made up to convert it into a front mount would be too much work and not worth the cost compared to going for the aps item?

another thing with the fmic, you'll have to move to an induction kit or have you already gone that route already?

 

As much as i didnt want an induction kit mate, we had to make that swap a few months back. This was when we maxed out the MAF sensor in the stock airbox. We made our own custom intake and mouted the MAF in an 80mm bore pipe.

 

maxed it out! what about going to 3 bar map and then you can get rid of the maf all together. or is that undoing good work you've already done?

 

Youre confusing this with cossie tuning mate, my impreza doesnt have a MAP sensor, its MAF based.
Id have top go to aftermarket management such as Motec/Autronic?Pectel to lose the MAF.
