Okay chaps.. for reasons i cant be arsed to go into, i need a new "quieter" exhaust.
I'll be having a new setup made by Simpson race exhausts. I will have them make it to a specific DB level so i have no more worries on track.
However one idea ive been toying with for a while now is having the end of the tailpipe curved down. Now the exhaust needs replacing this is a perfect oppotunity to have it done. This is quite commonplace on big power scandinavian cars etc but no really seen over here.
As you all know i like to do stuff a little differently.
I fully appreciate that loads of people will hate this (Diesel look) but i like it cos its different and serves a very good purpose of deflecting a large amount of noise without causing any restriction in flow.
Any thoughts??

You could always "Quarter" your sound output.

Locally built by a well known company but not cheap @ Price: £581.63 inc vat.

I'm not a fan of exhausts that point down to be honest. Not for looks, but for the very fact that they deposit the oil/deposits/particulates directly onto the ground in a slippery line.
Any biker will notice this and avoid driving on it particularly in the wet. I would like to see the exhaust positioned directly in line with the wheels so that the deposits will at least be cleaned by the following cars.
Not so much a criticism more of a moan.
Actually I'd go as far as saying that you are deliberately designing something dangerous (in my view).

I saw in the 'For sale' section yesterday a HKS 'quiet' High power exhaust system for an STi .
Was tempted myself, as you say, when a track day comes up, it is always a pain in the @rse, trying to pass the noise regs !!!

I understand what you mean mate.. however as far as diesels are concerned thats just how they are due to regulations now.
Although due to development of DPF (Diesel particulate filters) the air exiting the latest variants of engine is often cleaner than that that goes in in the first place.

As for the exhaust, it'll make the car look different, but in my opinion it's not as good looking as a conventional system.
As you mentioned, you'll have the final say
Loud and huge exhausts and not my thing, just draw unnecessary attention, and clearly don't make it any faster.
You only have to look a the size of the exhausts and the RCM and Zen Time Attack cars to see that. both have 3-3 1/2" outlets and develope approx 700bhp
(althought the Zen one is through the front wing
).

I think that if it is serving the purpose of keeping noise to a minimum without losing power, it has to be a plus, and therefore worth doing .
I have given up doing the 'track time' at certain events, as I spend most of the time prepping the car for just 20 minutes on track. The last time I did Castle Coombe, my car passed the 100Db limit at 99Db
, then after 10 minutes around the track, the exhaust had obviously heated and expanded, letting more sound past the bung ........ I got pulled off, as I did a 110 Db drive by

Not a fan of that myself. Side exit would look
If I was to have the down facing pipe, I think I would get a rear spoiler and a bit of work done that actually hides the pipe completely like some diesels do.
Think it might look qute good just smooth bumper all the way across with no visible pipe.

surely, it's negligable.
the ground cannot soak up much mate, in fact the resonance based upon direct impact can even increase resultant sound unless parked upon grass or a sponge.
think about when you go through a tunnel, sound pressure is a constant force and needs to be either soaked up or channelled away.
cant believe they have noise limits on the ring....
i'm sure you'll find a solution though

i'll put my thinking hat on!!!
