a quick scooby question
Hi guys and gals,
Car is booked into xtreme next sat. as you may have seen it's not too well. doesn't appear to be anything major as most of the time it seems to drive fine. when wet or from cold it splutters about.
anyway to get to the point i suggested to the wife that if it turns out that it's going to be expensive, i'd patch it up and sell it and buy a newer car. to which she didn't say no. so it has me wondering if i could get away with treating myself to a new car even if it turns out to be coil packs or the maf sensor. the question is what?
a) do i go for a p1 - only thing putting me off here is with the baby on the way, only having 2 doors could be a pain in the backside.
b) go for a bug eye sti in black, as frayz's looks
c) go for a wrx blob eye as i don't think funds will allow to go to an sti blob eye
d) keep it and have a 2.5 conversion when the current lump goes bang. only thing putting me off d is, my car is a 94 jdm wrx and i would be spending a lot of cash on a 12 year old car that would only re-sell for about £6k tops after it's had all the work done.
e) the worst option, be sensible and get a family car
so guys, what would you do?

lol. have been after the camera and a new car for a while. camera is much cheaper.
another option i have it to wait till june, see what payrise i get and hope it's enough so i can afford the camera and an e46 m3
i can see a pig out there with a flying helmet on though at the chances of that.

Sounds like its not dire anyway. If its all okay then you could keep it as babies are expensive and you could hold on to some cash for the new arrival.
If you definitely decide you want a new one then i think the P1 would be great but like you say it will be hard work to use as a family car when you need it to be one.
The blobeye is nice but still quite expensive. The bug sti like mine however i think is really good value for money and it being newer, chances are it will be much nicer to use and will give you less trouble than an older car P1 etc.
The classics are amazing, the newages are much more refined. Your welcome to have a propper look around mine anytime mate.
I personally wouldnt go throwing a lot of money on a 2.5 shortblock on a 94 car. To me this is a waste of money unless youre going for a massive spec and can write off the money you spend.
Its up to you mate.

yeah, once it's warmed up it seems fine. will still whip round the rev counter and the boost is till spot on. all i can think is that it's coil pack on the way out, maf sensor or a slight vacum leak that seals when at full running temp.
that is a point about the classic. am i going to miss some of the raw qualities that it has. yes, for me but, as a family car the newage cars as you say are more refined and will be better for the baby.
yes babies are expensive as i'm already finding out. it's not even here yet and it's costing me more than the car at the moment. i'm hoping to be able to pop along to the halfway house tomorrow night. although every time i say i'll make it, something happens at work and i end up getting stuck there till late. but fingers crossed, so if you're around i'll have a look, thanks.

I wanted to put a bigger engine in mine when i had my ENGINE rebuild,,
i wanted the 2004 WRX (£3500) or the 2001 WRX(£2500) engine & was purswaded to just have the Rebuild as was to hard & complicated & more exspencive to stick the NEWER BIGGER engine in
would have been great if it could have been pulled off

errr sell it and buy a second hand STi8. Some are going for as low as £12,500 and you even get a bit of a warranty.
I realised that I was pouring money down the drain with the MY98 turbo I owned so went and bought the WR1. No other way to do it IMO. The amount you just waste on maintaining the older cars makes even a seasoned city financier wince!

Nevetas - i bet you could buy one from your spare change
Gangsta smurf - the one i saw on here has a warranty till some time next year so would guess that it'd just leave me to get the price down.
i've been lucky with my 94 wrx. to date a new exhaust, new header tank and lambda sensor are the only bits that needed replacing other than the usual service items.

dude your classic is a stunner ... no doubts on that. but sometimes you gotta look and things from a diff angle and I mean the amount of money that some people poor into the classics just to keep them running at like 280-300bhp is ridiculous. If they added up all the bills and stuff they would have bought a brand new 06sti with the extras they've spent.
I loved my classic to bits but I was just putting money into a bin and then burning it. I spent in excess of £14k on that above the £7k purchase price (not including insurance of £4.5k) and only managed to sell it for a smidge over £5k.
Bought the WR1 and although I only was making payments on it for 9 months before I was lucky enough to be able to buy it, I had so much more dispensible cash.
Sad fact is that most people pay for all their car mods on the old plastic so very quickely loose track of their true spend.
If you can't buy it in cash then you can't afford it - that's my view IMO.

and yes, been there with the plastic to buy a few parts. managed to get rid of most of it now. will use one that has 0% and get it paid off before the rate runs out. one day i'll be able to walk into a showroom and buy a car for cash.
