Unhappy Is there anything wrong with my car?

Hi All,
I bought my car about a month ago (67k genuine miles with FSH), and have started to get concerned about smoke coming from the front.
When I have been driving, and the car has warmed up, I seem to be getting smoke coming from the bonnet vents and scoop when I stop... not a great deal of smoke, but enough to cause worry. It doesn't happen all the time either.

The engine bay is filthy, and it does need a steam clean.
I have checked the oil, and the car seems to be overfilled, the oil being about 1.5cm ABOVE the max marker on the dipstick.

Not being too mechanically minded, and never having owned a turbo'd car before, I don't know if this is is normal or not. The car pulls like a train, and the boost from the turbo pushes me back into the seat when it cuts in, so I don't know if the turbo has gone or me being paranoid.

Have I bought a dog with a blown turbo , or is it the fact the car has too much oil in it and it is pushing past the oil seals or whatever?

Any help and advice (not pi$$-taking) would be most welcome.
You can take the pee if there is nothing wrong and I'm being paranoid though.

Thanks

Andy

chill out man

nothing much wrong with your car, sounds like it's the power steering resevoir leaking fluid onto the engine.

look at the engine beneath the resevoir, if theres a puddle of fluid there, bob's you uncle

Probably need the gasket changed around the rocker covers.
I had the same problem, once the car gets hot.
being a boxer engine, the oil sits in the rocker cover, and you get slight drips as the seals start to deteriote and the oil drips onto the exhaust ast the headers and turbo up pipe are below the covers on teh drivers side.

A quick visit to Xtreme, will see your problems solved!

NPeckt, its not a white STI bought in a southend dealer is it? (93-94)

i took this car for a test drive and it was billowing out smoke when i brought it back.

i thought i'd blown something up and was well nervous.

you know the drill when test driving a scoob "Drive it like you stole it"

the geezer in the garage said its just had a new clutch and there might have been some oil on it - hmmm... dont think so mate!!!

seems you answer may lie in the posts above.

get it checked out, probably a £10 gasket or something silly.

good luck

Dazza

It is indeed a GREEN wagon, and I bought it from Maidstone.

When on the test drive, they guy took me through a small village. I looked away from the speedo at 110! so IMO he drove it like it was stolen

It did smoke a bit then, but he told me it was due to oil dripping on the engine (the engine really is FILTHY).

I'm glad it doesn't seem to be the turbo, I'll get the engine professionally steam cleaned (any recommendations ) and hope this will cure it, if not and it is the head gaskets, I will have to get them changed I supposed.

Thanks all for your input, it really IS appreciated.

if it is the power steering resevoir thats leaking, or indeed the rocker cover gasket, it will carry on smoking until it's repaired.

power steering takes around 1/2 to do, and the rocker cover about 1hr.

See Knowlesy(Xtremes), and he'll sort you out

Hi NPeckt(Andy)
There was me thinking I was the only green wagon in the village!!!
In fact I think we even looked at the car you've now bought!!!
(Y plate, Black/something garage)
(No test drive tho, guy was on his own)
Car did seem a peach. Engine not that mucky. I am more concerned if it's spotless. (What they hiding!)
Sounds like oil overfill to me.

Maybe see you around town.

Brian.

npeckt, be very careful when getting it steamed.
i've heard some horror stories with electrics and alarms etc, plus a lot of bolts and clips. rust up a week later, unless wd-40'd.

i'm sure there was someone on here that actually visited people with some cleaners and did the job manually (messy i know).

hope you get it sorted out for a reasonable amount.

I was thinking of that, but my luck is poxy, and I'm sure I would screw up some of the sensors.

There is a place in Chelmsford that does engine bay valeting for around £23.
Better if they mucked the engine up, then they would have to pay for repairs-no?
