Default swapping ecu

Hi a friend of mine has a UK turbo with what we think is a ecu fault, I have the same car, and was wandering if we could use my ecu to check it, will I just need my key to run it, it's a 1997 UK turbo.

Your key won't fit the ignition lock.

Not sure about MY97 cars but for MY99 you needed to get someone (dealer) to program the key to the new ecu (with it fitted to the car).

MY99/00 dont need the key coded as the immobiliser is separate to the ECU

MY97/98 do need the key coded as the immobiliser is part of the ECU
