Default Alternative to 97 RON?

Right, I live in Jersey and have just been informed that from the 1st March 2013, they will no longer be able to supply Super Unleaded (which is 97RON). This means that I will only be able to get normal Unleaded (95 RON).

I am going to take the car to the UK to get mapped anyway so will get it mapped on 95 RON but going forwards, is there an additive I could use to help or should I just stick with the remap at 95 RON?

At the moment, the car is:

2006 Hawkeye STI
Rebuilt short block by API which includes forged pistons, steel rods, upgraded oil pump, sump baffle.
Secondary air-pump delete
TGV delete
Miltek de-cat 3" exhaust
Simota panel filter
Ported headers
Harvey trick up-pipe

Thanks

I have thought about octane boosters but are they safe to use? Was reading somewhere that the ones which take a whole bottle per tank are not worth it but the ones that take something like 1ml per litre are better.

Any other ideas?

A methonal map would be ideal. Just would mean adding the same amount everytime. i.e. 10 litres methonal to 40 litres petrol

Edward, you're in a difficult place there. You MUST map it on Jersey 95 so bring a tankful and spare. There is no guarantee that UK 95 and Jersey 95 are one and the same.

Additives great to give it a boost on the day, but it is difficult to map it for say + 20% Methanol or whatever, as you need to be ABSOLUTELY sure that the mix and quantity are the same every time. Once you get it wrong you need to drain and start again. Even dual maps [ on something other than Ecutek ] are not even a certain engine saving option unless you are very careful.

So by all means use an additive for extra safety - but don't map to it.

I'm not sure you can get methanol on the Channel Islands. The British Hill Climb boys have to 'take' their own using 'inventive' means.

I'd have it mapped for Jersey 95 RON.

I'm in the same boat with this situation but am already running a modified motor mapped on 97, guess if all goes ahead ill have to drop power and go to 95!
Can't believe one fuel company has the monopoly on the other 3 over here.

Just map it to 95 RON, its safe enough. Like above tho, it'll have to be the fool from the island just to make sure it's ok when you get back....or move to the mainland?

you could always have it mapped for 95 and make up the loss in power with a nice shiny new turbo? would cost more at first but would be less in the long run running meth?

There's hardly going to be a huge loss of power tho is there? 5-10bhp?

Now, unless you're into flailing your ***** around in your local drinking establishment, this should not matter. It's about how the car drives that counts....well it is to me anyway.

Running a car on 95 ron will/can cause a significant performance loss, the other problem is that due to the retarded ignition needed egt's will rise. So if a car is being used competitively there are several considerations.
Ideally some sort of booster to bring the ron back in the competitive situation, problem there is that proprietary booster tend to foul plugs and "tango" the engine.
methanol is a good plan if you can get it and maintain the mix discipline.

cheers

A proposal has been made by an aftermarket "mapper" and is being backed by the fuel company.
Prepare to be amazed.
"Dear Ms Turton

Your email has been passed to us by the Super Unleaded Working Group.

Fuel.eXe Fleet Solutions ( <http://www.fuelexe.com/> http://www.fuelexe.com/) is based in Jersey and have been working on Fuel Savings for Fleets since 1998. In the UK we work with Zaviz International ( <http://www.zaviz.com/> http://www.zaviz.com/) as Ecofied ( <http://www.ecofied.co.uk/> http://www.ecofied.co.uk/) Fuel Savings Specialists. Ecofied, through Zaviz, is a Freight Transport Association Van Excellence Recognised Partner.

We also work with FuelQC ( <http://www.fuelqc.com/> http://www.fuelqc.com/) on cleaning Fuel in Bulk Storage in situ without having to remove the Fuel (unless the floor of the Tank is damaged and plugged by sludge).

My day job is working with Commercial Vehicle Fleets in the UK but I have had the necessary equipment to Remap Cars and Vans in the Channel Islands since July 2011. Since then I have remapped over 40 vehicles and have also done at least 6 DPF Resets, some for Main Dealers.

I have followed the withdrawal of Super Unleaded in the Channel Islands, noticed many comments regarding Remapping not being available locally and had a meeting with the Super Unleaded Working Group on Tuesday 5 March to present our credentials. As a result they have mentioned us on the FAQ’s that they have circulated to all RUBIS Retail Outlets.

For Cars & Vans we do OBD Remaps locally and Bench Remaps are done in the UK. For Motorbikes we can Remap some Marques, mainly Italian, through the OBD locally and all others will be a Bench Remap in the UK.

OBD Remaps are from £200 for a Turbo Diesel / Petrol vehicle and Motorbikes, from £300 for Performance vehicles and from £400 for Supercars.

Bench Remaps on Cars, Vans and Motorbikes will be from £295. De-Catting and DPF Resets start at £250.

Please find attached our Flyer.

With respect to your 2004 Subaru Impreza STi (Type UK) we will be able to Remap the ECU to allow for 95RON by reducing the timing by a few degrees.

We cannot be exact but we are of the opinion that about 25bhp will be lost by Remapping for 95RON.

Can you please contact me on 07797 741 741 to discuss this matter.

Yours sincerely
