What modifications has your car got, because if you say "this and that", then you'd be best getting it looked at anyway. I wouldnt trust anyone's word when buying a car unless I knew or trusted them.
A novice's tweak here and there followed by a 3" decat = Bang!
You do right to ask though

its had a decat and stainless straight through its real loud and pops, its got front mount intercooler on it,and the guy said its been remapped and is at 285bhp now but it really dont feel like. my revs aint going down quick enough either when changing gear so dont know what the cause of this would be, iv sprayed the cable with WD40 and cleaned idle control valve but still the same.

You've really got 2 options mate
Either ask they guy who you purchased it from , who mapped the car , then speak with the mapper ( most decent ones will have records )
Or get it plugged in by a mapper and they will know straight away if and what's been done

Start with the basics first like fault codes, air leaks, checking sensors. Make sure what you've got is working.
Regarding the ecu, take it out of the car (it's under the carpet in passenger footwell under a metal plate) and take the cover off the ecu. You can see if a daughter boards been added. Check here for details http://www.chip-racing.ch/en/chip-ra...u-my1992-1998/
If you're not sure what to do then you need to take it to an expert, don't guess and don't keep replacing parts until it fixes it like most do. Be careful where you go as not all experts are experts.
edit - 1998 year car could be a v4 or v5. if it's a v5 a daughter board wouldn't be needed. V4 would be yellow connections on ecu and v5 would be grey.

First port of call if I were the op would be a decent mapper , who might at the same time be able to identify any obvious faults

Try not to run it period.
If you have to run it to say get it to a garage, then run it off boost, say uinder 2'500 revs or on light load, this is obviously assuming that its something as simple as bad vac pipe issue and not something more sinister!
I see your in South wales, Im not sure who to recommend to you down there other than Alan Jeffery's (Engine Tuner) which might be a little OTT for what issue(s) you have.

It's what map it's running that's important , not the hardware , he's aware it's esl but that in itself is no indication of how it's set up
He needs to take it to a mapper or find out who mapped it

Either way you need it looking at.
I would be more concerned if it was my car now than when it was blatently running poorly, as now it could repeat when you least expect under bad conditions, and next time it might not be as straight to get it running normal (engine damage)

If its a 2000 ecu it may have the ecutek map as I believe they didn't require a ESL board, and if it had a ecutek sticker on there I would be inclined to think that's what it's got if that's the case
I'm sure somebody will correct me if I'm wrong
EFA :- just seen the pics so its not even the ecu he said it had, just get it up to indigo if that's your preferred choice and see what they say

Take it to a mapper and get it plugged in , they will tell you instantly if its been mapped , if it hasn't get it mapped
Or keep driving it ( not that advisable ) unless you're gonna take it very steady even then you could be playing with fire
They are you're only options at this moment in time mate
