It's so secret people who have witnessed the process of mapping have mysteriously disappeared and been locked in a box and can only be released by a master mapper ( bit like ecutek )
And I've heard there's a book you can get that's covered in the skin of Albert Einstein & Isaac Newton
Although I've never seen it myself

Nah , not really ( they would have you believe that it's some sort of mysterious black art )
It's not
Most start as a hobby , doing their own cars and small circle of folk then progressing from there
It's a little bit of a geeky hobby tbh but it keeps you occupied because there's loads to learn

Start by reading a lot about it , I've decided I'm going to have a go at tuning my car .
Currently reading everybit of info I can get my hands on .
The rom raider website is a great source of info .

This is also a good read to get you started
https://sites.google.com/site/asubienewbietuningguide/

Get a tactrix cable or vagcom if you only want to log for now and a copy of rom raider and start doing some logs then study them to help you understand how your ecu works and what's happening .

You can read and study a lot and that certainly helps and is a must
But the real learning comes with doing , because as is usually the case nothing works out in the real world like it does on paper
