Default Need more power, 2006 WRX

Currently on stage 1 mods: full decat, filter, remap etc

Any suggestions for next stage mods to bring my WRX to around the 320bhp mark?

I was thinking of bolting on a TD05 20G turbo, will I need an STI tmic to run this?
How much power is this likely to add?

Also, anyone know where I could get hold of a brand new one?

The 20g is too big for your goal, try and pick up a 2nd hand VF34/35. Look out for some STI injectors too.

20G is way too much for your requirements. As above post says you need a vf34 or vf35 which are direct bolt ons on a wrx and a good upgrade to your current setup

Are VF34/35 turbos from a Hawk sti?

Then go for the VF43 - Hawkeye STI. You won't need to change your injectors as they are the same as in the hawk sti. You don't necessarily "need" an sti tmic but would be better/safer if you did get one. Make sure u change the fuel pump too. I run 342bhp in my hawk wrx with vf43, sti tmic, full decat, panel filter.

vf34/35 vf43 from 06 sti vf48 from 08 onwards sti.

Have the vf48 fitted to my 06 wrx and mapped by duncan at 1.35 bar to 334bhp & 381lb/ft. Goes rather well. Dont go above that boost or you could hit chocolate piston-itus.

Best go sti top mount & scoop under tray.

Good luck. great fun trust me!!!!!

I hear the sound of a blown head gasket coming to this thread soon......Anything over 1.2BAR will do it sooner rather than later....and that's with a proper STI engine, let alone a WRX.

That’s not strictly true. The WRX & STI engines are effectively the same with a few bolt on differences, so no issues there. You can also run up above 1.2bar but certainly not recommended to run anything above 1.35bar as this could seriously increase the chance of head gasket & ringland failure.

You can blow a head gasket or ringland on standard 0.8bar boost too. All depends on the engine.

I ran 400/400 on a standard 2.5 for ages. Thats with abuse.

That was 3/4years ago, the car is still running the same engine with more power.

Yep, don't go above 1.35bar on a 2.5 ideally. Has been done as said above, but its risky.

So if I change the turbo to a VF along with an STI top mount and get it mapped and running 1.2bar, what power gains am I likely to achieve on this set up?

Last dyno my car made something in the region of 285bhp/345lbs.

What you are running is what I'm planning on doing...what does it feel like? When does boost cut in? Is it a steady plod then huge sledgehammer of boost or a more linear curve - sorry to hijack !

Richard's goes very nicely at that level - boost is very progressive but a huge wall of torque pushes everything along very nicely

Mapped lots of wrx hawks to 320 on std wrx tmic - that is about the limit for them although do occasionally get slightly higher figures. Better to fit an sti tmic and do it safer and make more power too

Im in a similar position
Just got my 2002 WRX , It's got the following.
Walbro Fuel pump
3inch exhaust including sport cat downpipe and decat up pipe.
Panel filter.
Remap running 17psi.

What sort of power do you think I will be running at the current stage and if I change the turbo and intercooler with a remap whats the max WRX injectors will allow.

Sorry for the thread hijack, Paul

The std bug wrx injectors will allow 310 bhp but changing to sti pinks will give you around 320 ish with a vf35 and sti tmic. Prob running 260-270 now if the map is decent and on vpower.
