Shock loading is what tends to kill box's, just doing low to high revs in single gear wont shock load it so unless its already got a problem it will be fine. If it does have an issue it's on borrowed time anyway.

Simply put dont worry about it

Are right ok I was told Bob wants you to hold car at certain boost pressures in certain gears then tells you to basically put your foot down in 2nd then 3rd then 4th doing hard acceleration hitting maximum boost mate cheers

dunno how he does it mate, i don't drive mine during mapping, normal insurance doesn't cover you while work is being done on your car so i dont want the risk of being done for driving uninsured.

^^^^^ what he said. If your worried and never go above 3500rpm why have you not left the car standard? Ive run 340+bhp on a wrx gearbox for 2years without any issues. Least if yours does go its not going to be a big cost to replace a 5speed box. If you want to rest easy save for a 6speed box. All the best and let put a post up after mapping day with what power you made.

Don't know how Bob maps, but, been in a car when Andy F was mapping it, couple of pulls through the rev range from 3rd to 5th on a 6 speed.

Personally speaking, I'd have went up to Andy.

Default mapping for boost level

bob rawle mapped my car we had it in 3rd gear doing some rate of knots! and he firmly said hold the pedal steady keep it there ! keep it there ! he was tapping away on hes laptop while the alcatek was been adjusted. all done , then we gave it a pull from 2nd to 3th to 4th, how many horses u think bob? he smiled and said oh about 350 ish. and still today it pulls just as well. and that's 3 years ago now. hes a good mapper indeed. as im sure the other guys are.

As above, when road mapping with Bob towards the end of the session after he has set the boost level in each gear he will ask you to do a power run. This is when you thrash it hard through the gears, Bob checks it's all safe and gauges roughly what power it's at. I managed this once with dying clutch hydraulics by pumping the pedal between gear changes and a slower change. Tell Bob the issue and he'll work around it. Why aren't you driving the car? Bob is one of the best you are in safe hands.

Who can tell? You pay your money and take your chances. I ran my V3 STI box at 400 for a year until the centre diff went noisy then went 6 speed. A mate ran that noisy box for another year until his engine blew and someone else is still running that noisy box four years later. Your box isn't likely to blow on mapping day unless it's faulty but the extra power may shorten its life. Bob could map it keeping the torque low to save the box, but that's not why we get our cars mapped. If it was me I'd hope it survived mapping day then see how it goes if the box blows used ones are cheap or start to save for a six speed. Good luck.

sorry to bump an old thread as my first post, but reading this has got me thinking hmm my box wont last long! I am aiming for 320-330 in my 2001 wrx, If I was to look at a 6 speed box change, whats involved and what sort of price am I looking at? thanks!

How did your box hold up OP?

320-330bhp should be fine on a 5 speed if you dont launch it at every chance you get. For a 6 speed conversion you will be looking at around £1400 min plus fitting. The 6 speed boxes will take more power but they do also develop issues and expensive to repair. Least if you break a 5 speed then one can be picked up for around £300. Ive read that hawk 5speeds are the strongest.

brill thanks mate! next thing I will look into is the cost of strengthening the 5 speed or even if thats possible when you get 320, i think the temptation to go for 350 is there!

I do drive with a heavy right foot, only do 100 miles a week but there normally fun miles! although the oils etc will be dropped ever 2500 miles as per normal.
