Default Engine Fault Code Reader for Classic?

Hi all

I am looking to buy a fault code reader that I can use on several cars. One of these is a 1999 WRX which currently has the check engine light on.

Can anyone tell me a fault code reader that will work on this car as I can't seem to find one?

If I can get one that will work on the other cars too that would be great, I think they all work with a standard OBDII reader. I wasn't sure if I just need a different lead, different reader, or just can't get one for the classic.

If the question is a silly one, I still have lots to learn here!

Many thanks
Lee

with a classic shape impreza you should be able to join the connectors and read the codes flashed up using the ECU light:

but a 99 car should have an OBD port that you can use with an ebay vag-com cable and your laptop running FreeSSM or another SSM (subaru select monitor) supported app.

someones already done a wee howto on an outback:

Hello

So since the above I have purchased a vag com lead, installed the drivers and downloaded FreeSSM but it will not read the ECU, it's like it can't even see it's connected to the car.

Anyone have any ideas why this might be?

Thanks

freeSSM isn't bad - are you definitely selecting the right COM port in the program? The com port won't appear until the cable is connected and you won't get any info unless the ignition is on or the car is running.
