Default ECU question?

This maybe a dumb question but if I have my battery removed, will I lose the map that is currently on my car? I ask this because I've heard that if you want to reset the ECU or remove a fault code then you disconnect the battery and pump the brake pedal.
Like I said, it maybe a dumb question but if you don't ask, you don't know.
