Default Track/Fast Road Gear Selection!

Just a quickie

What do you think is better when driving on medium fast roads do you gun it it 3rd gear maybe 7000 revs or do you go for 4th around 4/5000 revs?
Probably better to be nice to the sti and keep it in 4th but def feel like its a little quicker and more controlled in 3rd, i´m not sure which is best all round

I'm always a gear up on my mates if that helps.

No point living on the limiter IMHO.

Mine has a six speed and a fairly fat torque curve, so I normally change up at 6200 rpm, as that keeps it on the boil, however it does sound good up to the limiter for the added "pop" on the upshift....

Thanks

Why is it such a dumb question! I´m just not sure if I should rev hard in 3rd or shift up to 4th!!!

If you have a rolling road printout the "ideal" smooth shift would give equal torque in each gear but to be fast, you often need to wring it's neck in the first three gears.....

IMHO

Maximum acceleration is achieved with maximum torque applied to the road, so allowing for gear ratio effect that means the engine running at the max power available, that will usually mean running in the lowest gear available.

However as you can't drive like your hairs on fire all the time, just lower your upshift points slightly as you back off from 'go maximum'*!

Blyton is a rally-x circuit, tight & twisty, and I can't afford to blow it up or bend it !

With turbocharged cars I have found that there is no need to rev the hell out of it as there is plenty of torque in the mid-range so using a higher gear and smoother lines is better suited IMHO for driving a subaru. if it was a VTEC you could have it on the limiter all the time though

or if you have a twin-turbo scooby with a nasty void in the middle of the rev range
