Hi,
I was just musing the other dayabout whether it would be possible to fit an extra gear (I have a 1995 RA vvshort box) for use on the motorway.
Excuse my stupidity if this is outside the realms of possibility!
Or could I cahnge the 5th gear ??
here could I get the parts from ???
All comments gratefully received

Cheers!

i wouldnt bother.

your ratios are nicely stacked, but they are combined with a 4.44 final drive.

You could change this to a 3.9.

this would retain the nice stacking of the gears ie the rev drop between them would be unchanged, but it would equate to a 14% higher speed at any rpm point.

I'd quite like to do a similar thing to my my93wrx. It tops out very early in each gear ! (2nd-55 , 4th around 100mph can't remember the rest) but very close gears !

So how 'easy' is it to change the final drive then? and where would you get the final drive cog from ? From a UK spec turbo?

cheers
Alex

if you get it from a uk spec turbo the rear final drive is wrong and you will need an 11:10 transfer box too.

I think the sport has a rear crown wheel and pinion of 3.9 wihtou the extra hassle.

It is far from an easy job and needs the rear diff casing cracked open and the gearbox removed and taken almost completely to pieces as the front diff is almost the first thnig to go in!

but yes, you could probably get the parts quite easy, grade A will probably sell them.

It would be easier to request a swap of your rear diff housing for the new one, and or your gearbox for the new one.

Alternatively you could just fit a normal sti gearbox and retain the 4.44 final drive. This would be much easier to do.

There is quite a demand for the close ration gearbox and you could find it is worth more money than the one you are buying.
