Your looking at one of the Ra box's then. Later ones v5/6 are known for being stronger.
I know David at api does a few things to make them stronger.

No 'standard 5 speed will cope with 400 hp, even when they were new, Now after 10 or 12 years it is too much to hope. It will be false economy to try to ' uprate it ' it cannot have enough effect to overcome weak gears.

A forged set from either Albins or PPG or any of the forged gear types is your only cloice.

Avoid Elite or Quaife in my opinion.

I know the 6 speed problem you face as we have one or two customers that run in that class and they are all in the same boat.

We van offer an unbreakable dog box kit to sell, but unless you have an all out racer it will not be any good for a road car.

What about the haweye 5spds? Thought they were a lot stronger than the classic 5 speeds?

What about the 5 spd from the hawkeye? I thought these were stronger than the classic 5 speeds? Due to the 2.5's torque??

They are heavy by about double the weight of a 5 speed. We have had them running in cars up to high 500 hp's and I know others have too.

Synchro will not be a strong feature up there, but gear strength is as good as anything.

I am led to believe that you cannot use a 5 speed gear set in a 6 speed case for that formula, but that is third hand, however the advisor of that has bought a 6 speed type car so that he can run 6 speed, which seems unnecessary cost if he could have got around it by another means.

surely the 5 spd would cope with 400 from the hawk if used as a daily drive, but in a hill climb i wouldn't be too sure alot of abuse to be taken

Martyn J ran a 5sp hawk box in his 580hp impreza for more than a few race days and drag days! It won't last for ever but it is a lot stronger! And the ratios are the best you can get

If he is in the class that I am aware of, then effectively, gears and internals are free - sequential is not allowed - the original gear cases for the car model must be used.

David

PS Tidgy, I know where you're coming from, but in terms of power capability the 5 speed is way out of its league above about 380- 400 hp and whilst l also know of many folks who are ' getting away with it ' professionally l cannot recommend a 5 speed standard type box for that job. power level as it will not do it.
