Default Tell tell signs of a worn clutch?

I'm new to power full cars. I've smelt what I can only think of being my clutch after hill starts does this mean I'm just doing a crap hill start or is it worn. The car pulls well under hard acceleration so I don't think it's slipping under normal driving. Any advice would be good.

Drive on a straight road at about 30 mph in 5th and clutch in, hit the limiter, then dump the clutch and see if it slips or grips? That's how I've checked in the past probably the worst way to check but its better than splitting engine and box to check...
