Default Gearbox or diff issues

Hi all, I've just bought my second classic uk turbo (I regretted getting rid of the first) and when I bought it I knew there was an issue with either the gearbox or diff. The guy who I bought it off has given me a spare reconditioned gearbox with the car but I drove 200 miles yesterday and it definitely doesn't handle as well as my previous one. The symptoms of the fault are a loud ish whining/whirring all the time. When it's on load it goes away slightly but when I back off its at its loudest. It drives fine other than the noise. He told me it was the upper linkages on the gearbox but I don't really know anything about gearboxes so I thought I'd ask on here to see if anyone has any other thoughts??? Due to the handling I can't make my mind up between the gearbox or diffs! I also noticed a loud knocking when in 4th when accelerating and a friend said its definitely the gearbox but I'm just not convinced :s
Any help would be brilliant!

Im no expert, but i was getting similar symptoms on mine when the transfer box/bearings went.

The car also made a knocking noise on full lock in reverse, sometimes.

If you can get it up on a ramp and get someone to sit in the car and accelerate you should be able to hear if it is coming from the gearbox or the transfer box.
