My MY01 went in for it's 10k service last friday. I reported that there was a rattle from somewhere in the engine at around 3k rpm in 3rd gear. I was told that this is a know fault with the MY01 and a replacement clutch and flywheel will be order to rectify the fault.

Not knowing too much about flywheels, doesn't it have to be balanced on the engine? If it is not balanced could engine damage occur?

I've also been told that this particular warranty repair is not always fitted to every MY01 as Subaru only issue the parts on dealer allocation method. Is this true?

 

I am almost certain that the flywheel does not have to be balanced on the engine. Any problem you have with the car should be taken care of under warrenty at ANY Subaru dealer.
