Strange goings on with the Scoob tonight!!

Was driving along normally when i realised that the speedo was over reading to the point it seemed like it was reading KMH instead of MPH and when speeding up it would not pass 140 even though the car wasn't doing anywhere near that speed in MPH and just stayed on 140 even as the car carried on accelerating???

I stopped at a friends house for a while and when I left the speedo wasn't regestering anything at all and was permanately on zero. Then about 2 miles up the road the check engine light came on so i stopped and checked the oil coolant etc without finding anything amiss. So i carried on gingerly with the check engine light having not come on when i re-started the car? Another 5 miles later(Nearly home)the car started popping and banging much more than normal on a trailing throttle and the check engine light came on again so i stopped and had a quick check again. This time when i started the car the light remained on and stayed on till i got home.

What's going on with my Subaru?????

The only thing I can possably link it to is the car has recently come back from having the 5th gear syncro done which involves removing the gear box....I presume the speedo reading is taken from the gearbox??

Could anyone shed some light on these problems as i'm worried about driving it (Even to the garage) with the check engine light on.

I'd be grateful for any advice available.

Tony

Mate,

Sounds like the elec speedo drive has come loose, shorted a bit(hence 140 reading), then dropped off all together. This gives a check engine light and limits the boost in a 'limp home' mode I think (flame suit) etc....

Not too sure about where the reading is taken from but i understand that if the speedo isn't working then the car goes into limp mode which should just about be enough for you to get it to a garage,

could be to do with that, i'd take it back to the garage and get them to check the speedo is working ok.

tony,
as above, it would suggest that there's a problem with the speedo cable.
it's gearbox driven, and will induce limp home mode if there's a problem, so that's your first port of call IMHO.
hope this helps,
simon
