Just bought a 97 STI the speedos been converted from KMH to MPH . However compared to my old WRX and my wives car the speedo appears to be overeading clocking an extra 2 miles for every 20 miles travelled .

Can the speed converter thingies they add fail ? or could it be the whole speedo needs recalibrating is this expensive.

The wheels are standard 16 inch wheels , I suppose if i put 17's on with diferretn tyres it may compensate ??Thoughts.

On my calculations if i do 12000 miles it could put a lot mnore miles on the clock than i actually do.

Any experiences help appreciated

Wink

A 10per cent error is about normal.Fitting 17" wheels can make the problem marginally worse but it is very marginal ie the circmference of 16"x50x205 is slightly greater than 17"x40x215 so for same engine revs the car covers less distance but records what it would have done for 16".
If you want accurate speed and distance consider a SPA Microprocessor. £160ish. Easy to fit.
Alternatively fitting a Uni-chip allows for speedo recalibration on later M/Y cars. Not sure from which M/Y but obviously not the mechanically driven speedos.
Speedo specialists may be able to recalibrate also especially electronic speedo head. Look at ads in back of Jap Tuning, Banzai etc.

Thumbs up

Hi Lumby,
SPA Design Ltd @ Tamworth. They can give you a list of stockists and stock position. Speak to Tony. Say I put you on to him. 01827288328. Mike/Jason @ Scooby Mania may be able to help 0115 970 8555 or perhaps Demon Tweeks.
To calibrate I marked tyre and did exactly 30no. revolutions in a super market car park along a white line (in the middle of the night) and measured accurately.
Published tech info from tyre companies varies from make to make and is not accurate enough. Ring me if you need any help to install or calibrate.
From memory £160ish plus postage.
07860 302020.
