Question

I have just fitted my boost gauge and I have been out for a play.

The readings that I was getting were: 3rd gear 11 psi, 4th & 5th peaked at 15 then settled at 14.

Does this sound high for a standard MY97, only mods TSL back box + iTG filter. I have read that most boost gauges read low by 1psi?

My car was first registered in March 1997, how can I tell if it is a 93 - 97 engine or a 97 - 00. The intercooler is straight on, not at angle, does this mean it is the newer engine?

If it is the newer engine what ecu, turbo will it have and what will the fuel cut be?

Sorry for all the questions, just curious

Thanks

Martyn

Assuming it's a UK car, you have a phase 1 engine,(phase 2 came in '99 onwards) fitted with a TD04 turbo as standard. fuel cut for '97 is about 16psi. Pressure achieved sounds normal. Phase 2 engines have a different air flow meter (90mm), phase 1 has an 80mm.

Question

Alan I thought the engine change at 1997, when you buy parts for your car they ask if it is a 93 - 96 or 97 -99?

On various dawes device fitting guide sites (harry boy, etc) they say this relates to post 97 cars?

It is a UK car.

Hi,

It did change at 97, different intercooler, pistons, turbo ECU etc. etc.
but Alan is right (hi m8) the "phase 2" didn't come out til 99.
Confusing I know.

pre97 engines Uk were 208bhp 201lbsft
97-99 were 208bhp 214lbsft
99 on were 215bhp 215lbsft if I remember right

Cheers

Rich

Rich

Does it mean if I have the straight on intercooler that it is the 97 - 99 model?

Yep,

If it's the straight in intercooler, chances are you have the later model (although straight on intercoolers CAN be fitted to earlier cars with a few tweaks)

If your is a 97 car it will have the open plastic mesh grille (not slatted)

It will have the bigger intercooler, the air inlet pipe from the airbox will go towards the front of the engine (early ones go towards the back. You should have the smaller TD04 Turbo and fuel cut should be around 1.2bar.

This is a pic of my brother's engine and mine (before I modded it).

His is a 97 and mine is a 96.

MINE:

MY BROTHER'S

Hope this helps

Rich

p.s. My brother hits almost the same boost as yours 1.0 bar (14.5 psi) peak, 0.9 bar(13.05psi) held.
What make is your boost gauge?

Rich,

my engine is the same as your brothers, intercooler in the same place, coil, etc

So I have the 97 engine, what will the fuel cut be?

Does anyone think my readings where high?

Your figures look fine Martyn.
