its a box with a pipe with holes in going straight through it,
it takes some of the noise out of the exhaust, but is not restricive.I thought mine was a cat and had a pipe made to replace
it,they cut the end off to make the new pipe. When i picked up the box i could see straight through it.

The cat is between the down pipe and the centre section, it is this piece of pipe that makes our exhaust system 4 pieces rather than 3 pieces like the Jap cars.
Something you need to bear in mind when buying exhausts from a Jap manufacturer and they didn't realise there was a difference!

I've just taken the downpipe cat outta my MY01 and it is well worth doing as the car now pulls much stronger to the redline. (Thinkin about doing the up-pipe soon!)If you have PPP,I'm sure there are issues so maybe worthwhile speaking to Pete at Scoobysport and see what he recommends?
Good luck
P.S: As others have said, there are 3 cats on an MY01:
1 in up-pipe
1 in down-pipe
1 in centre section (Which gets removed as part of PPP)

There is a cat before the turbo in the up-pipe and I've heard this gives another 12bhp or so on top of the gains if you were to do the downpipe as well.Just for info,I've read that the downpipe has the most restrictive cat!!!!

that is a mother of a down pipe
will get the up pipe!!!
me thinks mapping from prodrive thngy may produce to much of a flat spot with the down pipe, tempting though!
any pics of the up pipe?

Its a Magnex of my MY99.
Believe me, there is no drawback whatsoever in fitting one of these. Its big smiles all the way.
Im not joking about the smiles either.
