Which gearbox etc. for tarmac rally car
Hi, I'm new to the Scooby scene, but been a farly regular reader of this forum.
I have an Impreza GDA Model 80 2003 WRX (Bugeye) which I am currently converting for rallying.
Having come from the Escort background for competition I'm finding the Impreza route quite a steep, yet enjoyable learning curve. However, I have hit a problem with regard to the gearbox which seems to be taking me around in circles ... I'm sure the community will be able to help me.
The car is currently a 5 speed manual, non DCCD.
What I need to do with it is:
Could someone confirm that these assumptions are correct and also advise on the best gearbox to go for to start off with that will help.
All advice will be appreciated.
Thanks

What I need to do with it is:
- I will be looking to have the engine at the 300bhp mark through which ever suitable means available.
- Use a hydraulic handbrake for tarmac rally use.
- Have a fairly reliable gearbox for approx 12 months (5 or 6 speed).
- Moving to a straight cut dog gearbox (5 or 6 speed).
- Use launch control and flat shifting .
Could someone confirm that these assumptions are correct and also advise on the best gearbox to go for to start off with that will help.
All advice will be appreciated.
Thanks

The box you have will do for now. It is not so fragile as the earlier [ pre 99 boxes ] My advice is to go with what you have until you see where the ratios pan out. It is possible to put a Dccd on the back of the box you have, in fact we do it regularly. You are never going to have a perfect set of ratios for all types of rallies in a manufacturers type box, so be objective when evaluating.
A proper ecu like Syvecs [ Solaris ] or Motec will run the dccd against the hydraulic handbrake problem. My choice would be Syvecs - but I know the owners / makers .....
Flats shift and so on will only ever be a dog box type and ones that are worth having will set you back 5 grand or so.
If you want to talk through the dccd option for what you have now call me and we'll sort you out.

But once you start converting non dccd cars or are working with a competition ecu you have to set the programme up.
Not sure if Dccd Pro or Neetronics have that feature if you use that to control a retro fitted Dccd Maybe some one will follow and advise ?

I had a Neetronics diff controller in my Type R rally car and it had the handbrake release , you could manually adjust it between 5% and 100% lock , set it to lock under braking and open up at the higher speeds so you don't have the transmission losses.
It was a good piece of kit.
I had a Modena 5 speed dog box in my car , and it needed stripping and looking at every 3 rallies or so , its certainly not a cheap box to run.
I know others running the STi 6 speed box and think they are great
Depends on how hard your going to be on the car , and how much you want to spend

Quick question
So does the DCCD unlock in a blob jdm if you were to pull the handbrake, not that I want to lol but never knew they done that, was it something to do with the road car versions they had to release for the rally versions?

The 'donk' is the dccd releasing. You'll get the same noise if you try to pull into a parking space on full lock with the dccd engaged. Largely it won't do it, as it will have a feel that something is grabbing. If you stop mid movement and turn off the dccd it will also go ' CLONK ' but rather louder..........
Not doing any great harm.

In the passive position - [ right back ] there is no actuation of the magnet so there should not be a clonk then.
