Default 5 speed gearbox info needed

my 5 speed box in my 94 plate impreza has dumped 3rd gear tonight and as its the only thing i havent replaced on the car it was long over due,car runs around 350bhp with about 330 lbf,as its a import its got the short geared box in it which tops out at about 120mph and to be honest i have been thinking about swapping the box out for the longer geared one to make the car more useable, the box i have fitted at the moment is ty752vb3aa,have heard the ty754vbaaa box is a good upgrade??would i need the diff also to fit this box and is it the longer geared one???any other ones anyone can think of would be a great help, dont really want to go down the 6 speed option unless its a easyer fit
cheers

hi ty754vbaaa is standard from a p1/sti5/6 and is matched to a 4.444 rear diff and yours will need to be swapped .
best 5 speed in my opinion if you dont fancy a six speed and gonna treat if with care,
fifth is 0.738:1 and thats the long geared one.

hi ,
your original cable will fit in that vbaaa box if you remove the electronic speed sensor thats fitted in it on the later versions.

its a fairly simple swap with the rear diff but the rear shafts are different on the later v5/6 ones from memory.

my mate with his v1 wrx used a rear diff off a v3 sti 4.444 and it used the same rear shafts as his originals.

ps you will also need to tap out the gearbox for the (lower)? cant remember which ? starter motor fixing hole and drill a larger hole in the starter to allow the starter motor to fit on or alternatively fit a stud m10 one end and m12 the other in the gearbox to secure it without drilling the starter
cheers Dave.
