Recall 6 speed gear boxes ??????
#1
I just got an email from someone on IWOC stating that they have recalled the following cars becuase of problems with the 6 speed gear box:
GDB - 002022 - GDB - 006461
September of 2000 25th - March 28 of 2001 day
GGB - 002012 - GGB - 002243
October of 2000 13th - January 24 of 2001 day
This really sucks I can see it now I will be stuck down here with no one to repair my car
Anyone else have and info on this......shouldn't they have tested this new 6 speed a gazillion times before they manufactured it ??????
UNreal,
Ray

Ray, all car manufacturers can have recalls, it's not exactly uncommon in the motor trade.
What matters is how that is dealt with.
If you are affected then you should talk to the people you need to before panicking or having a moan. For all you know they may have a batch of boxes waiting for the first people who respond.
go talk to your contacts and then let us know what the score is.
cheers

Unfortunately,
Living in the Bahamas I don't have the above luxuries. There is no Subaru dealer down here, yes I took a gamble bringing the car down here but one of the reasons I choose a Subaru Imprezza is their passed great record.......just my luck to be stuck trying to number 1 get a new gear box down here (probably a few thousand) and number two finding mechanic that can install it properl..........maybe now you can see the reason for my 'moan' and panic.....Oh well, hopefully my car gear box don't go kapput or I will be screwed....
Cheers,
Ray

dont you think it would be more sensible actually contacting Subaru and finding out from the horses mouth what the problem is?
For all you know they may be being recalled because the wrong spec oil was installed.
Speak to someone at subaru and find some facts out rather than thinking your screwed, why worry when you could resolve the issue???
Maybe i am being too logical?

I will post what was sent by someone from IWOC club via email. It was translated from Japanese which is why the sentences don't flow well. It looks like more than gear oil to me.
Anyway, hopefully I am completely overreacting.....but it does scare me as getting a gear box delivered here and installed properly will be a nightmare
Here is the email I receivedL:
Yup and if you follow the second link down you get to see there was a
recall of 654 off STi 6 speed gear boxes in the following production
batches....
GDB - 002022 - GDB - 006461
September of 2000 25th - March 28 of 2001 day
GGB - 002012 - GGB - 002243
October of 2000 13th - January 24 of 2001 day
The reason reads.....
"In the transmission, because heat treatment is inadequate in the oil
pump shaft inside the advance 6 step manual transmission, there are
some where strength is insufficient, the mission case breaking by the
fact that the particular shaft breaks and ? sees in the opening of the
mission case and the internal gear and is packed, when there are times
when oil leak is caused, continue use in that way state, when it is
worst, there is a possibility of becoming travelling impossible."
To inspect for it reads.....
"You inspect all vehicle and the particular shaft, you exchange any
which have been broken with the transmission of the item well, any
which have not been broken you exchange with the shaft set of the item
well."
From what I can see there has only been one reported case.

First, is your car within the SN recall range?
Next, its not actually a big deal. The gearbox oil pump shaft is the bit in question. The batch of "bad" shafts apparently was not heat treated to the correct spec, hence their high temperature strength is suspect. There has been once reported case of failure WORLDWIDE. Subaru issued this as a non-urgent recall, probably due to the fact that the consequences of failure is potentially expensive, and that the fix is simple.
If you don't do sustained 200kmh runs, I really doubt that anything will break. The gearbox oil pump is powered from the output shaft / center differential, and hence its rotation is related to wheel speed (and not engine speed).
My dealer replaced this shaft in 6 hours. Pretty quick for a gearbox job. The gearbox didn't have to be dropped. They managed to do it with only removing the center diff casing. The shaft itself has the diameter of a thick fountain pen, and is about 3+ inches long.

OK I am starting to feel better,
Yes my car does fall within the s/n range:
my car is a GDB-005***
Anyone can give me aguess as to how much the rod costs if you have to buy it ?
Anyone can comment on how goood a mechanic you need to replace it or is it a fairly straight forward job, bearing in mind we don't have any Subaru mechanics down here ?
Thanks again,
Ray

IMHO, if I had to buy the rod (or pay for the labour even) then I would tell them where to stick the car and get the lawyers onto it.
Why should you be out of pocket for a ***** up by the manufacturer ??
Call Subaru and discuss it with them. I very much doubt you will need to pay for it.

Razor,
Fuji have a 1 year warranty on ALL Subaru's made so they should be willing to at the very least, send you the parts required FOC. They should also (hopefully) cough up for the labour too at anywhere where you can get the work done.
