Unhappy

I had mine checked out at the dealers yesterday for a knocking noise from cold and they have confirmed it as the tensioner as I have already had no 4 piston changed.
They want £194+vat for the part plus approx 2 hours fitting at £52+vat per hour!

Stuart

forgot to say mines a 98MY

Plums,

0W oil is too thin for scoobs and should not be used. How many miles did you do with the 0W oil?

Have you heard what piston slap sounds like?

Cheers,

Wrexy.

OK. I have a MY97 Sport and am getting a little woried now. Mine sonds almost like a diesel on cold starts. Is this the fabled pston slap or is it just the cold engine. It goes as soon as the engine reaches normal running temp and has got less dodge since I fitted an ITG filter last week.

nope
that a hint?

its running a bit better... less hesitating.
was gonna let it run till the service.. and then get *nice* dealer to look at it
they said they could clean it for me - they seem to have someone who is 'trained' to do that... unofficially

i would clean it myself, but im not sure of my ability to get the MAF oot... tho i reckon id be gentle enough cleaning it

tho sounds as tho a new one may be the best option.. given what some people have said on here... no mucking about.. its just so damn expensive

i dont rev above 6k... so hoping damage wont be done

is it coming across that im lazy?
I aint... i just a wee bitty tight

and paranoid about my 'grrrung' noise on startup, the the oil flecks in the plastic radiator expansion tank...

I'll check it on Delta Dash if you want to bring it over and I can give you the logs to take away. Note that WREXY is running a bit lean presumably because of a dodgy MAF and the ECU is corecting for some knock. Not something to sit on I would say, unless cleaning it sorts it.

SCOSaltire,

You have mail!

Ah I see it's for a MY99. That grrrung noise. When do hear it? I know on it's on cold start up, but do you have to rev it a little past 1500 to hear it? When does it go away. Very quick after start up or just after a few minutes when it warms up?

Cheers,

Wrexy.

yeah - thats it exactly - i have to rev it a little past 1500...
its about 30% of what it was by about 3 mins after startup...
i *think* it goes away when the car is fully warmed up.. but i am no longer so sure it totally goes away..

Sounds like either piston slap or maybe the cam belt tensioner. Because it's supposed to be rare for piston slap on MY99/00s although not impossible, it could be the tensioner. Some people with MY99/00s thought they had slap, but it was the tensioner. Apprently they sound similar. I wouldn't wait for my service interval. I'd go check it out tomorrow!

Cheers,

Wrexy.

PS Let us know what the outcome is when you get it checked.

It does sound similar. I still think its got piston slap but the dealer doesnt think so. He recons its the belt tensioner making all the noise. I hope they are right!

I have a new WRX (10000 miles) and sometimes on cold mornings there is a real heavy knocking sound, I hear it most when I start the engine idle for a minute or two select reverse and reverse without touching the gas, I can hear it lightly selecting before reverse but once I release the clutch and the engine takes up drive, revs drop and the knocking becomes really apparent.

I've left the car with the garage with no succes

I have noticed 2 things though....

1 If I start the car and drive without waiting no apparent knock... possibly to do with engine dilatation.
2 I also found that thicker oil also reduces the knock, I'm now on Castrol RS 10W-60 before the garage used Castrol SLX 0W-30

It's true that it does sound like piston slap and the mechanics
response of "they all do that" wasn't as assuring as it could of been!

Hi Wrexy

Yeah I've heard what piston slap sounds like and it ain't nice!

The Subaru garage put 0W-30 oil in at the 7500 service.....

I'm a bit of a freak about the quality of oil so changed it 1000 miles later for Castrol RS 10W-60.

I would of done it earlier but until I joined scoobynet wasn't
sure if 0W-30 was the right oil for the job.

Even in the manual it was a little vague!

Now I know!!!!!!

Although I have to say the car doesn't seem to rev so easily with the thicker oil..... but now the engine sounds better and less tappy!

Plums.

If you haven't got air con in the way, changing the tensioner is quite easy, I did mine (99my) on Sunday. The most difficult thing initially was loosening the pulley bolt, but I eventually made up a tool to hold the pulley while undoing the bolt.
I found my original tensioner had a green spot which indicated that it was the revised type, but there were small design differences. The face of the plunger showed signs of wear where it contacts the hardened steel pin in the block, so movement must have taken place. I've only used the car once since so I'm not totally sure if there has been much improvement. I'll post on here when I've made my mind up!

Bugger! I've just realised this b*****y thread is nearly a year out of date!! What a waste of time!

hmm was concernd about the tapping noise on mine when it was cold
mechanic at revolution seams to think its the lash adjusters

if he thinks its te lash adjusters then so do i
says its not overly noisey for a scooby engine
maybe a little more tappy then the norm, but the oil that was taken out of the car was aperntly pretty black

says the lash adjusters are a heads of job, so there staying as they are lol
sounds perfect when warm so ill worrly when it rattles and taps when its warm and leave the cold stuff well alone
