Hi this is the story pulling away from lights in my 1997 wrx wagon and when I shift to 3rd gear there is nothing there gearstick gone all loose floppy then all of a sudden it finds 3rd gear there were no bangs or any noises I managed to drive home 10 miles with no whines or noises drives as good as always but just in 3rd gear now it's stuck in 3rd gearstick goes up and down but not sideways and feels like it's not connected to anything. Any ideas on my problem would be highly appreciated thanks in advance

 

not sure but sounds like linkeage - i think you got third by luck

get underneath her - youl soon see if linkage is gone

fingers crossed for you m8 as thats the best outcome - the rest are a lot scarier

Hi just had a look under car linkage seems ok it is moving inside the gearbox Had a look under the intercooler and there is a rod which is loose by the spring not a very good description but I think the fault is inside the gearbox. Any ideas cheers

 

thats the fork that hold the clutch release bearing - its pushed by the clutch slave cylinder - the spring you are seeing is to help it return - im afraid its sounding like an internal fault - if you drop the prop shaft and take of the gearbox support beam ( with a jack supporting the gearbox )youl get a much better look at the linkage m8 and see whats going on

Hi will do thanks for your reply and information if I can't fix it I'll take it to the garage. How will I know if I've broken the gearbox or the linkage cheers Adam

 

take the sump plung out drain oil and check for shavings mate possibly lost a gear, mine got stuck in second when it blew second gear, after giving it some abuse to free it, i then lost 2nd but had all other gears eventually.
