The gearbox is a constant mesh, so the gears don't actually disengage. The hubs connect the gears in turn when you select gear. If you attempted to just slam them in without a synchro mechanism the dog teeth that join them together would grate. The synchro cones are supposed to grip the hubs to enable the same speed of rotation allowing the teeth to mesh smoothly. If the cones wear, they don't grip properly and the fact of differing speeds mean the teeth crunch.
If you can afford it now, early intervention can save you money on parts.
If you can't run to it immediately, just take a nice slow change between those gears and it'll last a bit longer.
