Help id-ing my gearbox please
My gearbox has come to the end of its useful life, crunches into 2nd and badly into 3rd at any sort of speed.
Now here is the tricky part, its a 96' sti import i was told by the privious owner that the orginal engine kicked the bucket and he changed it with another phase 1/2 engine along with the gearbox. So this makes the vin plate in the car useless in id ing what gearbox is now fitted to it, the sticker by the starter is also missing
Any other ways of telling?? it's a 5 speed of some sort, how many did they do?
Are there stronger 5 speeds than others? or is it just the ratios that are different? I only use mine at santa pod and track days, will be running roughly 330-340bhp soon.
Thanks.

Without any ID being available that box could be anything. There are two ways out.
Buy a matching gearbox and diff from somewhere and fit the pair
OR
Strip the box you have and count the teeth on the ring and pinion in the front, and also the drop gears in the back.
As for the drop gears JDM ones are 30 x 30 and UK ones are 30 x 33
So if you have 30 x 30 you will need a rear diff of the same ratio as the front. If you have 30 x 33 you will need a 3.545:1 rear diff, as the front should be 3.9:1
You can count the front diff teeth through the drain plug hole if you don't mind getting gear oil in your eye...........
