Some info from IWOC:
The standard exhaust is extremely restrictive, consequently the ecu expects
boost to climb at a very slow rate and is very slow to react to increases.
If you fit a performance exhaust, then turbo spool up is in a different
world and a lot of boost can be achieved before the standard boost control
set up does anything about it.
The reaction speed of the control system is controlled by small airflow
restrictors in the piping between the turbo, wastegate and wastegate control
solenoid. The smaller the holes, the longer it takes for any pressure
changes to work through.
By either opening out the size of these restrictors, or by replacing them
with larger holed ones, the reaction times can be altered to match the new
rapid spool up. This gives much more accurate boost control and prevents
overshoot.
