Default Opinions on 6 speed STI gear ratios

Folks - wondering how you get on with these ratios - seem to be on the JDM STI 01 to 05.

It's actually for a different car (project) but the 3rd, 4th, 5th are a perfect match and those are the ones I am interested in.
Are these 3 gears 'too' close to enjoy? Or does the change in rpm work nicely? I need to keep a turbo on the boil and have a 7k rpm limit (peak power about 6500). (My final drive will be the same too)

1st: 3.636
2nd: 2.375
3rd: 1.761 ( 77mph @7k?)
4th: 1.346 ( 100mph @ 7k?)
5th: 1.062 ( 133mph @ 7k?)
6th: 0.842
final 3.9

Any opinions welcome!

What turbo are you running? That will play a part in how high up the RPM you need to keep her.

The shorter the gear ratios the better if running a big big turbo, but then you have a nightmare on motorways.

An inbetween is always good. I can't see you having any issues with those gear ratios.

It's a GT3071R 0.86 - I'm 14psi at 3100 rpm. Need +3500rpm for proper sparkle/go so 'big' but not huge by any means.

I've got a massively long top gear bolted onto this (for cruising only) so the 3/4/5 are the 'go gears' for fun on the road.

You've pretty much answered my concern anyway - cheers

I run a 3076 0.63 on a 2 litre with a hawkeye box, (with longer ratios ), once rolling it's just a case of hanging on for dear life...

Yes six speed but even longer !

3K rpm @ 80 mph in top means a theoretical 200mph top speed !
I haven't found a reliable source of info but I keep looking...

Bit off thread, but how are you getting that type of spool? Is it on a 2.5?

It's a 2.3 (saab lump). And a dubious Tubular exhaust manifold that does seem to improve spool a bit. Was 507bhp at 6600rpm, red line now 7k.

Issue with current box are the epic ratios and chasm between 2nd and 3rd.
2nd gear gets me to 84, 3rd to 130mph.

The more I dig into the scooby world the more I realise how massively shorter the gears you guys run are.

If the jap spec is the 4.44 I see, then it's going to be brutal (and fun). Feel free to move this to other marques but it's such a specific question it seemed better here...
