Why would a Legacy need a new clutch at 50K Miles?

That's a very open ended question. If a car is driven badly (e.g. riding on the clutch a lot of the time - but not necessarily thrashing the car) then a clutch could need replacing after just a few thousand miles. So 50K miles is not really that surprising.
