Default Uprated 5 speed

Whilst ebay surfing I came accross a company that does an uprated 5 speed box on exchange for £800. Rebuilt with new gears, x-rayed and shot peened, frozen and shimmed. Seems quite a lot for £800 or am I just being a bit too suspicous today

Just curious if anyone had tried them, the place was up near liverpool, called gears I think.

yeah i have one of their boxes was sick of blowing 3rd gear, shot peening relives all the stress out of the gear and makes it much stronger

6 speed or a 5 speed built with a proper gear kit is the only way to go.

Although I'm sure this will be marginally stronger than a norma 5 speed it's certainly not a solution I'd go for.

I should point out im not planning a change was just interested given the amount it comes up. Agree about 6 speeds ect but still interested what these would handle given the cost difference.

CP Autos are in the process of rebuilding original 5 speed boxes. They might be able to help you futher.

Ask for spence or Nick, no one else. I think they're quoting prices a lot cheaper than a 6 speed conversion.

I'll be honest, i did 3 boxes in, alright i was putting 2nd hand stuff in, and my mate has a escort cossy and got a built box from this company so i gave them a call. they do loads of subaru boxes but say people dont want to spend money on the gearbox. i can understand really as you never see it!!!! i spoke to one of their customers who has one in a RA rally car used for track days and hill climbs and went for it. I bet for 3 boxes i spent over a grand with labour oil etc etc. £800 fit and forget.

fit and forget upto 350-400bhp tops if you're lucky. Beyond that it will break.

I dont think anyone doubts the strength and durability of the 6 speeds but when you see something half the price its human nature to give it consideration. Lets say someone munchs their box at 360/360, this might be worth looking at should they not want to spend on a 6 speed.

By the way very much enjoyed the article in JP about your car, like reading the articles where its all about the build and not just someone chucking an obsene amount of dosh at it

Only worth considering the process on new parts, pointless IMHO on old fatigued/tired gears etc

According to the ad the gearsets being used were new. Not sure what the price of a new gearset is hence me being a tad suspicous!
