I’m having a problem with my MY97 UK Scoobs gearbox (80k). When I change from 2nd to 3rd I get a slight kick or jerk through the stick, there is no actual movement, just the feeling of whatever is going on in the box being transmitted up the gear stick. This sometimes occurs from 1st to 2nd, but never happens when changing down, just changing up. The problem gets better when the car is really warm or when I change gear very slowly. In general the box is nice and quiet.

Does anybody know what this is? Could it be the clutch? It is very high and has probably only got 5K left on it. My concern is that it is the synchro’s are on their way out. I’ve got a back box and induction kit on order and wonder if this is just going to provoke the problem?

If it is the syncho’s, does anybody know where I can get this fixed (London / Surrey) and how much it would cost? Is there a recondition or exchange option I can take to replace the box? Are they generally a good option?

Also, is a clutch change a gearbox out job? If so it’s probably worth getting this changed at the same time? Anybody know where I can get a good clutch quote from?

Sorry for the confusion, but I’m a newbie and really don’t want to get ripped off!

One last thing: can I add a gearbox adative via the dip? Will this help or knacker it? Which one?

Cheers,

Rob

Rob,

I remember that my gear change was a little notchy before I changed my clutch. Try searching th archives for "notch gearchange or gearbox".

Good Luck

Unhappy

Give Mike Rivett (Rivett Auto's) a call: 01306 628009
He's near Horsham (south of Dorking, just off the A29).
They did my clutch the other day for an unbelievable price picked it up that day and had it back the next morning.

Mike can probably rebuild the box or source you an exchange one if that's what he advises.

Hope that's of some help
Iain.

Spoke to Mike Rivett, he gave me a price for a clutch and fitting of GBP350 + VAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He said the clutch is good for 270ish break and he's done about 7 this month.

Also asked him about the gearbox. Apparently the UK synchro on 3rd is a bit week. He said that a few bearings and 2 syncho on 2nd and 3rd would cost about GBP250 parts and maybe GBP150 - 200 labour. The clutch cost covers removing and replacing the box. So I reckon I can get my clutch and box done for about GBP850. Beats Subaru price of £1000 for clutch alone!

Cheers,

Rob
