My engine check light comes on and stays on.I've read various threads in the past that talk about this but I was under the impression that it only comes on if you fully decat the system! (I still have the downpipe cat in place)
Is there a way I can see what the ecu error code is without resorting to taking it to my dealer who will probably say that it's down to the decat anyway? If so,what's the crack?
Just in case anyone's misread this thread - My car is an MY01 with WR Sport backbox and Scoobysport twin decat centre sections......

Thanks in advance! (Have tried to call Scoobysport but there's no answer so I thought I'd post on here in the meantime)

Cheers,

Nick..

P.S: Do you have to fully decat to get flames out the back or do I still need to do more stuff to the car?

A full decat should do it but a blow off valve will help with flames on over run or when really gunning it.

I'm pretty sure Pete will be able to reset the CEL.

Are you going to get the Fix board for the CEL to turn if off ?

Your local dealer should be able to check the error code.

But if you only got a decat centre and still have cats 1/2 (up pipe and downpipe) in place, I'm surprised you are getting the CEL come on....

Take it to your dealer.

It's a 420 error code for the CEL. I'm surprised it comes on with the d/p in place. You really need the decat up pipe as well as d/p for flames (remember my WRX at Donington last year ).

The MY01 only chacks the "efficiency" of the downpipe cat, so removing either of the others (uppipe or rear) will not trigger the CEL 420 code.

A couple of suggestions for you;
  • Have you kinked the wires on the rear Lambda probe causing it to fail? This struck me as easy to do when fitting mine.
  • Are you sure the problem is the cat efficiency code? After fitting my de-cat centre I noticed that I was revving it harder in the gears(it didn't used to be worth going past 5,500 with the cat in place, removing it meant that the power continued on to 6,250), and I then got a CEL. However, on checking the error code it turned out to be the cam position sensor that was failing at high revs, and this was replaced under warranty.
Best place to start is by getting the CEL code pulled. Good luck.

Thanks for the help guys Much appreciated!
I think Duncan could be correct in his second point cos I did notice it came on last night when I booted the car past the 6000rpm mark.I spoke to Scoobysport earlier who also mentioned that Subaru have had problems with the cam position sensor on the MY01's.I'm gonna whizz it into the local dealer next week and get them to check it for me!

Thanks once again!

Nick.. (Are you all going to the big one on sunday then?)

glad it was something that will be sorted under warranty. Now you can enjoy the car with the extra power (and noise) and not worry that you've broken it.

but you don't get that 'a job well done' feeling unless you've had to swing on it 'til it nearly falls of the ramp
