A lad that I work with has a 200sx and he said that on their forum that they convert to front mounted intercoolers off other cars..
I think the car in question was a volvo 7series... Pipe work wouldnt be a problem as I could weld something up...
Has anybody done this, or think it would be worth trying... car is a 94 5dr turbo with hks cat back exhaust and hks filter...

I cant see a problem if the FMIC physically fits and it will flow the amount of air required.
You need to get the shortest route possible for the pipe runs so as to keep "lag" down to a minimum.
Sounds like a good way to save shelling out £1150 on a kit!!!
Good luck and let us know how you get on, MD.

Thats exactly what I thought... obviously needs to be infront of the radiator... I read somewhere about turning the inlet manifold around so may try that as well... any suggestions, apart from dont do it!..

Ive just done this for my brothers corrado g60, and fitted a large audi front mount in the centre of the front of the car.
I modifed the intercooler so both ends came out at 90 degrees, then welded up some brackets to fit it in front and below the radiator. We then went and got some 60mm radiator hose, 2m long, from a motor factors, and some exhaust pipes, 2m of 60mm steel, and 3 right angled bendes in steel.
I then ran the hoses, cutting and bodging to make it all fit together. He know has about 12 different bits of hoses in the induction loop from the charger.
After some playing, where it kept blowing the hoses off, we got it working, and apparently it has made a huge difference to the standard g60 corrado unit, which is small and fitted in a stupid place.
So, it is definately possible, but you just loose the good looks of the properly developed kits which come with the correct bends and ends to fit everything together.

Gareth,
Thats exactly how I was thinking of doing it, execept only using rubber hose where needed, and welding all the pipes up... What audi was the intercooler off?? I am also thinking of adjusting the inlet manifold to mount the throttle body at the front of the car.... I think it would need some machining and welding going by other posts... as it would come through the top of the bonnet..
The pace one is out of the question, as the whole idea was to get the cost down...

I think the fmic was off an audi 200 turbo diesel - slightly longer than a subaru tmic, but probably about the same volume.
I couldnt get rubber hose that would be strong enough, yet flexible enough to run all the way up. The corrado has a really small engine bay space though, and all the subaru ones I have seen have nice long straight sections on top, with seemingly lots of space. I dont know what its like going down to the back of the bumper though.Samco hoses were rejected on grounds of cost. Basically I iffited the intercooler for a weekends work and around £100 - the intercooler was around £50 from scrappy.
I have seen cars with the inlet turned round (rigolis 560 bhp car for one) but I doubt it would make that much difference. I think there would certainly be easier ways to up the performance without resorting to that, but it does look good...

Its just that with the ban the car stays in the garage... and Im not short of space or tools really.. Just cant justify the cost for the odd trackdays I am allowed to do without a licence..
I fancy a big.. Intercooler... Just need tiny motorbike plate... (dont want to remove it!) So need to find intercooler and spare inlet manifold..
Think pipe work would be tight around hks filter that I have....
Have to have a proper look...

I wouldnt... would have to move the alternator to where the air con shouuld be and then weld a inlet on the front and blank the back one off... ABS may also be in the way unless I move the radiator back 2"...
Might not be worth the effort... then again... looking at the cost I may try... Got nowt to loose.

The 7 series volvo intercooler is huge, it's really is large, but cannot take 1.2 bar for long. The plastic end caps blow off! I ended up with stainless steel tie wraps around it. Pace offered to fab me some aluminium end caps for about £150 but it was years and years ago now.
If you are willing to strap it up the 7 series intercooler should serve well. I know someone building a 4.0 litre twin turbo engine (not a scooby) and he's gonna use a 760 turbo intercooler.
