Default clunk from the rear when changing gear

So, I had the rear shocks replaced to cure the knocking noise , now the next annoying noise is a clunk from the rear when changing gear sometimes , I can also get it to make the noise by 'pumping the throttle' Would I be right in guessing it's diff related ? Or is this another case of "it's a common fault they all do that eventually" .Car is a 2005 STI type UK , with PPP and 50k on the clock

Many thanks with any help

Mine does that, its not common enough to be a rear diff issue, it only appears in certain situations (snap on/off throttle ++, lift off at slow speeds when boost kicking in)
Going to start looking at bushes... and i know the rear shocks are goosed too!
There is a known problem with the rear diff cradle and there is a kit to fix (Scoobyworld)

I had the same problem on my 53 plate sti ppp, took to a few garages but no one could tell me what it was so I left it, then a few months later I had my rear discs and shoes changed and now its gone, no more clunking.

my my02 sti has clunking brake shoes when first applied say in morning, but dont think you would confuse that with transmition clunk.i have a clunk when coming on and off gas, like when prop shaft is rotating when slow speeds mainly,i had a full geom done at chevron motrsport (did a great job)and asked them to look at this clunk while working on her, they said that it was possibly just the preload on the gearbox and prop and nothing to worry about.i have had all new coilovers, arbs, droplinks, alk, and rollcentre kit so its fairly new with bushes and such so maybe its made it more noticable, has anyone heard of this before ? its from the front ish area and is not a loud clunk like diff slap when launching an old classic just a little clunk ?

Thanks for that , certainly worth taking a look at as the rear brakes must be due a change soon with 50k under their belt
