im going to use the shell helix oil as this is what the subaru dealer uses.
however, there are two types available, shell helix plus 10W 40 which the dealer uses. or shell helix ultra 5W 30.
on the containers, it shows that the ultra is more suited for turbo engines and hard driving.
however, is the '30' a bit low, if you know what i mean?

any help appreciated

thanks

ian

I spoke to my local dealer yesterday and he said that they were recommended by Subaru to use Duckhams QXL (?) 15W/40 for turbos. People on here have said that Silkolene 15w/50 is one of the best to use. Not sure where to find it though.

I'm also in a slight dilemma - car needs a service but dealer can't fit me in until I get back from 'down south'. I know I will be doing at least 750+ miles in the meantime and I'm about 250 miles away from the recommended interval. Is it worth getting another garage to do an oil change or will 500-750 miles over make much difference?

hi hugh,
thanks for the reply
yes, im not sure either where to get the silkolene from, have not seen it anywhere.
as for the milage problem yours has, its nothing to worry about, that sort of milage wont make much difference.

thanks again

ian

p.s. anyone else know about the helix?

I'm sure you've also twigged that the 'Plus' is only semi-synthetic and the 'Ultra'fully synthetic. Some members tend to put in the Helix Plus from the 1000 to 7500 mile service interval to help the bedding in process and then go onto a fully synthetic oil such as the 15w Mobil 1 Motorsport, 10w Castrol Formula RS, Silkolene, and others. I know of some (me included) who use the Shell Helix Ultra in winter and Mobil 1 Motorsport in summer. The Mobil 1 can be found in Halfords but stay away from the 0w standard version of course.

For me I would not use the Shell Helix Plus as it is semi-synthetic, and avoid the Ultra in spring/summer months as it is a bit thin really.

Otis.

thats what i wanted to hear. i didnt want to use the plus. but thought the same about ultra, in that it was too thin.

This question comes up twice a week. Where has Search gone?!

The conclusion of the debate is that, after running in on semi-synth, after the 7,500 mile service go for fully synth.

Of the readily available oils, Mobil MotorSport 15-50 or Castrol RS 10-60 are the ones to go for. The Silkolone and some other less common oils are also top notch.

Richard.

PS Edited to add that changing your oil every 3-4,000 miles is the biggest favour you can do your engine. Use a Subaru filter as they're good and keep your warranty secure.

I found a list of Silkolene distributors.

Silkolene

Will get the oil changed before I go away.

Should the oil filter be changed at the same time as the oil? ie I'm gonna change the oil before the service, can I leave the oil filter change till the service rather than at the time of the oil change?

Thanks,

Hugh

thanks for the replies guys

hugh, yes, always change the filter at the same time. use a genuine one as mentioned above, as non-subaru ones are smaller capacity. a geniune one is only £10+vat.

thanks again

ian

p.s. i always change my oil every 3000miles
