Gearbox Question/Help
I have a 2000 UK Classic.
Car has loads of mods....
Running around 340BHP roughly!
I have the standard 5 speed gearbox fitted still & have had
mixed opinions about it.
Some people says it is fine to run as it is, some people suggest
to fit a 6 speed STI gearbox as it may put too much strain on the 5 speed.
Hoping to clarify this topic and also wondering what are the advantages and what prices are like for a 6 speed gearbox.
Thanks
Neel

The advantage of a 6MT is that it gives you the extra gear, and is a much stiffer, stronger unit than the 754 5 speed and thus able to comfortably handle far more torque than you are likely putting through your current one. If you pick and choose you can also get a limited slip front diff and DCCD centre, the spread of ratios you want and so-forth.
The downside, aside from the cost of obtaining one (and the other matching parts you'll need to fit it) is that it'll make your car something like 30 to 40kg heavier.
It's an urban myth to say that the 5 speed "cannot cope" with the amount of torque you are running through yours. Aside from anything else a driver with good mechanical sympathy and technique will be naturally protect the hardware much better than somebody who's rough and/or does a lot of hard launches.
If your current gearbox and clutch are coping with the way you drive the car, it doesn't sound as though you should be in any rush to spend a couple of grand on a six speed setup.

Yeah thanks for the info.
I guess i'll leave the 5 speed for now rather than rushing to spend more money.
Also car has exedy uprated clutch & lightened and balanced flywheel by API Subaru.
