Default Change push clutch to pull clutch

I have a WRX Hawkeye 5 speed.
Has anyone done a convesion from a push clutch, which mine is. to a pull clutch so I can uprate clutch.
No one does a uprated clutch in push format for wrx 5 speed.
I will require a better clutch for the power I am going for. (450/450)

I have had a gear set with shafts and plated diff, fitted to the 5 speed already, did not want to go down the 6 speed DCCD line.

You are right about the gearbox as a standard box, The gear box has been modified, believe me please the box is now not the weak point. it now pulls 165mph in 5th,when it hits the revlimiter at 6800rpm. the 5 speed boxes are a lot lighter, thats why I stayed with the 5 speed.

If you'd have fitted a 6 speed, a pull-clutch conversion would have been simple

Yes bud it is a full aftermarket gear set made by Elite gears, 1st gear runs longer so runs to 36mph instead of 28mph, 2nd gear goes behond 65mph, so there is no need to change into 3rd for the 0 to 60.
There are no sincro, it is dog engagement, 1st gear is straight cut the others are helicel, running Platted front and rear Diffs 4.111s

You are right top speed does not mean anything, Yet.

But I'm trying to make a Subaru that is just a bit different to others. every body goes 6 speed. I'm not saying its the best way, But I think its good and its not the cheapest way for sure. I'm still getting used to all the whines and clunks. 5 speeds are a lot lighter than 6 speeds

At this point it is one of the best mods on the car. Did not want to use PPG as They have recently reduced there torque figures. And I have heard of some failing.
So used Elite, A UK company so spares are here not in Japan. It was not just the gears but the shafts through the gear box.
2700 for gear set
400 for the shafts
90 for modified 5th gear bearing to feed more oil.
700 for each plated diff. 2 off
gearbox out, re built with kit then gear box back in the car another 600.
Then the VAT for the Gov
Ho and bought a spare gearbox while it was been built so we could go on our holidays to France in the car.

It was not a cheap one, 6 speed would of been cheaper, but with future engine mods I think I would of still broken that.
If you have driven a car with a dog box, you will know how fast you can change gear, if you have not driven a car with a dog box, you would not beleave how fast you can change gear.
Elite make gear boxes for alsorts of race cars, and are very strong.

Now I just need to change the clutch from push to pull.

Any one.

Yeah, I know them
A friend has the 6 speed sequential in his Mk2 escort rally car, had a fare bit of trouble with it though. Although it could be his driving?

Sequential, Elite have built one for the subaru, they have been testing it a rally car running 600nm. all good,
Sequential have got to be the best, But it would of been another 5k ish
So it was a no no at this point.
Clutch, fueling and engine / turbo later this year. then the car is just about done.

MK 2 escort they were the car, would love a nice one now.

To answer the original question. You'll need a new front [ main ] gearbox case that will take the pull clutch equipment. There is no provision in the push clutch case to take the pivot pin and so on.

We have cases here and can supply you or change it for you. There will be an amount of re-shimming / adjustment needed for your internals into a ' new ' case.

But essentially, once you have the case, fork, hydraulics and so in it is no big deal.

I had a long chat with the Elite people at Autosport. We have used themn for one off gears and so on for oddball Japanese tranmissions that we need to repair Not the speediest company we have ever dealt with. But the goods when they arrive are impressive.

I did look over their gear sets and so on. It has got chances by the look of the quality.

Hi Dave.
Addison has said you made him a clutch for his, do you know of any or can you make a push clutch that would be ok with 450/450.
Twin plate / paddle owt that will do the job, I heard some clutches are noisy, I am blest with the fortune of have other noises in the car and been a bit mutton. (def)

if not what would be the costings of the casing and all the work.

thanks loads

If you have recently stripped one of the hawkeye WRX boxes i asume you have found a fair amount of changes as these boxes have been holding up wll at above 400lb's feet. They are physically wider than the 754 boxes and I assume the rework is to accomodate the extra torque of the 2.5

Bez, We recently used a Carbonetics twin plate clutch that held over 500 hp well from the moment we fitted it. Drives like a road clutch too. That is a pull clutch.

Cost if l recall was circa £1220 + VAT for all of it [ £1433.50 inc ] Plus fitting of course.

Arch, There doesn't seem to be anything physically bigger or better on the gears and shafts running gear inside those late type boxes. They do use the one piece driveshafts [ so no stump shafts ] They also have taper rollers for the drop gear set at the rear. The drop gear bearings have always been a weak point.

But other than the bigger bulkier [ stronger ? ] case there doesn't seem to be any reason to assume that the gears are better.

The2006 2.5, 5speed is a puch clutch though, I can not find a push clutch that wil do the job. I might not be looking in the right place.

Thanks for getting back again.
Thats a great help.

I take it you get lightend flywheel and full clutch, and is it a direct fit.
Whats the lead time on them, as I am at Cadwell on Saturday, think I might be requiring one soon after.

I need to give you a ring and have a chat about engines too, for me to get 450 I need to go forged, Thinking about getting a Cosworth short motor, I know you do engines in a big way, but don't know if you do forged.

I will be in touch about the clutch,,,

Thanks again

hello bez300 i have the same model car as you (great minds and all that), but have recently stripped second gear. did you fit this kit yourself and if so was it a straight swap, as in no messing about and are the diffs sold seperate or is that part of the kit. the way i seem to go through gearboxs this kit might be in the long run a good option. any extra information would be appreciated.
thanks ever so

Hi Fingermouse.

Q1. did you fit this kit yourself.
A1 No,

Q2. was it a straight swap.
A2 No,

Q3. are the diffs sold separate.
A3 Yes.

Because almost every one goes 6 speed, there has been no real development for the 2.5 5speed I believe mine was the 1st of this type for this box by this company, every thing was made from scratch,
But it is a fantastic bit of kit, The Diffs were made for the car through a company that I do not know, I know it sounds daft, but they are development work too, they were the 1st diff made for a subaru by this company.
The only thing I have found hard to find was a clutch for the push type,

Dave at APi has come up trumps.

The Guy you need to speak with about the gearbox and diffs is Ric 07749 151388. It will not happen next week, it does take quite a bit of time to get every thing together, But the gear box on my car is ace, and I am not blowing my own trumpet, its the gear box, they are noisy though.

I hope this helps, If you talk to Ric just say Tim gave you his number.
