Default RA gearset upgrade - opinions?

Hi guys,

After shredding third gear in my MY00 classic turbo ive been looking into either getting a replacement box or repairing my own. Being low on cash at the mo, a 6mt and ppg are out of the question so ive been looking at the RA gear sets and they seem to be quite a popular upgrade in the states (V6 RA Gearsets).

Does anyone know of anyone in the UK that does these gearsets? Cant seem to find any websites on anyone doing them.

Any opinions about this [small] upgrade?? The shorter ratios should be fun (apart from motorways!)

Thanks guys in advance!

mike

p.s. car is running ~320bhp and the stock box lasted 110k at this spec!

I thought about the same, but I'm now going 6 speed instead!

Backward step IMHO, remember those homologated gearsets where designed for a car running a restrcitor ie GRP N/A regs.

But restrictors generate more torque, so not sure thats a valid point, as its torque that kills gearboxes.

Not trying to be difficult, but genuinely interested, as have a twin scroll turbo burning to get out of the box in my garage and onto the car, but the gearbox is an issue.

The twin scroll will produce more power lower down, it (depending on what you want to do) may well just eat that sti gearset anyway.
Have you not looked at going for a PPG or 6 speed gearbox?

Im after low down power, as do some hill climbing.

At 1.6bar on the previous gents car it was running 380bhp, but will only run 1.3 or so, so should be less than 350 with about the same torque.

PPG's and 6 speeds seem to still be crazy money- Im thinking up to 400bhp to keep the car nice and driveable, and its a classic, so its lighter anyway.

Im still thinking a 5 speed as such, so very interested in this.

In my opinion the RA gearset is useless for hills and sprints you end up taking to many changes. I found that up to around 400/400ish the later 754 5 speed boxes had ideal ratio's for the hills and sprints up here in Scotland.

I used a TY754VN4AA box for two seasons running around 320 ish bhp the first year and around 390sih the 2nd year and its still going strong. This was out of an 04/05 blobeye wrx. The TY754VN6AA boxes from the later hawkeye WRX's are stronger again but require the male stub shafts.
The 5 speed boxes also have the advantage of being around 30kg lighter than a 6 speed box
