Default standard clutch

Hi, does anyone know what a standard blob sti uk clutch is good for ? im asking because a month ago i thought my clutch was going because of very slight slipage in 3rd , i did the tests recomended by splitpin and all was fine ! , but it did it again today under hard throttle in 3rd, since the remap its running 345/340 ,since it has'nt slipped in the last month under normal driving im wondering if the standard clutch cant take the extra power ?? . Cheers Rob.

The standard clutch can start slipping around 325 bhp so at 340 bhp plus there is obviously a good chance of slippage because of lack of clamp pressure. It is not a full slip at the start just that the rev counter needle advances beyond the road speed usually around maximum torque which is usually approaching 4500 rpm.

Thanks for the reply harvey ,thats exactly whats happening, I think its the original clutch and at 65k and a recent remap i think its a bit tired now. The test i used when i thought the clutch was about to go was simply to use 3rd or 4th gear low speed and a steep hill, and give it full thottle, if its worn out that should get it to slip !.

I supply clutches and if you are within striking distance of Darlington we have a fixed charge for swapping clutches of £155 regardless of five or six speed. It is not uncommon to come across a slipping clutch during mapping in the 325 - 340 bracket on these cars. It is so imperceptible at the start that many owners will miss it. Your idea of running up a hill obviously helped identify the situation. When your friction plate comes out it may be OK, the problem is a lack of clamp pressure.

Thats a good price but im miles away in Wilts, it passed the hill test fine, normal driving its fine ,it was under hard throttle high revs in 3rd it slipped, so i will try to make it last a bit longer, but will get a price to supply an exedy when im ready , Cheers Rob.

You guys aren't going to believe this. I have been running a series of turbo tests and experimentations and yesterday, having fitted a new turbo earlier in the week, while mapping I detected clutch slip. At the point of maximum torque the rev counter advanced 300 rpm or a little more and then held while the road speed caught up.
This is down to a lack of clamp pressure from the cover used and I am confident the friction plate is still in good order.
I will either fit one of our ACT Prolite flywheels (£225) with increased clamp mod (add £40) or perhaps that flywheel with an alternative clutch cover with greater clamp.
What it does indicate however is that the latest turbo combination is knocking out a hell of a lot more torque.
Graphs to follow.

PS: The clutch that is on was only fitted a few months ago but at the time I was not expecting to exceed 360 ft.lbs so it was OK for what I wanted and I have been ambushed by achieving over 400 ft.lbs.
This is one of the reasons that it is very important to specify the right clutch at the time of purchase.
