bite on clutch is very high
Right i went away in the scooby last week and had to return home to pick my cossie up and use that as i was scarred my clutch might go on me. did about 70 motorway miles then when i got of the motor way i got the bite but there was only about an inch of travel left. The clutch has always been high with at least a couple of inches of travel left but ever since owning the car when its been on short journeys you get a smell from the engine ceramic type smell like the clutch slipping but it has never slipped on me. Do i need a new clutch or it just adjusting my scooby is a 51 plate 6 speed what sort of price will a new clutch cost and what makes should i stay away from.

As far as I know you can't adjust as they are hydraulic. I have just bought a new clutch for mine (2002 WRX) and will be getting it fitted next week. Mine is displaying exactly the same symptoms as yours with the addition that it definitely slips when flooring it in 4th or 5th at around 3000rpm, makes overtaking interesting and has added a whole load of 'turbo lag'.
I went for a stage 1 Exedy clutch and lightened flywheel from justclutch on ebay. Few problems with the wrong parts being sent out but couple of phonecalls back and forth and all sorted. They are an excellent price! If you go for them make sure you check the part numbers sent are the correct ones - check Exedy Clutch Europe, Performance Clutches and the justclutch advert for the correct part numbers.
For reference my Exedy stage 1 clutch kit (plate, bearing and drive plate) and lightened flywheel was about £500 - fitting is a bitch, most none scooby garages will quote you 7 to 7.5 hrs labour, specialists may quote less.
Make sure if you get the clutch done you get the flywheel skimmed or lightened at the same time.
