Default gearbox or replace reverse gear???

hi

my reverse gear has gone totally, all the forward gears work... I've not driven the car since so hopefully if the gearbox is salvagable it will still be OK to just fix reverse.

BUT...
I don't know if it would be best just to replace the whole thing with a 2nd hand gearbox?

what do you guys think?
also, whats the best place to find a box... is it just a case of phoning round the salvage yards?

cheers
john

i always find its best to get the box repaired, if you buy second hand you dont know exactly what your buying and its best not to chance it with a scooby. Whereabouts are you located. I have my box overhauled at GEARS southport i will pm you there number if you want

If you can remove the box yourself then get a transmission specialist to strip it for £50 to inspect the damage and quote for repair. Had one overhauled this year for £450 all in.

As said above, you don't know what you are getting with a second hand box and these boxes are a pain in the A**E when it comes to removing/refitting.

Whereabouts are you?

I'm in Manchester.

Does anyone know what gearboxes would be comparable with mine.
Mine is a UK 1996 turbo 2000 so would an import box fit etc?

Would have thought there would be plenty of transmission places in Manchester, try the yellow pages/internet.

Jap boxes for imports, uk boxes for uk cars as they are different ratios (unless you change the diff to match of course)

Your gearbox id no. will be on a white strip abou 4 inches long on top of the bell housing near the starter motor.

Have a look here for compatable boxes The SPDA - Transmission Chart

thanks for the link, I've just looked

looks like my box code was only on for a year... does that sound right?
it says my code should be TY752VN4BA... I need to just check that on the car though.

the other ones with the same ratio's only have 1 number differant in the code so would they be compatable?

hmmmm, so if I change the box and diff I can fit a import box? how are they differant? will the import be a reduced top speed or something or doesn't it work like that?

thanks

Yep that's the right box.

As far as I am aware the following should fit
TY752VN3BA
TY752VN4BA
TY752VN5BA
TY752VN6AA
TY754VN1AA

Have personally used a MY98 box in a MY97 car for a year, no probs till second gear went.

If you replace the uk box and diff with the import version you will find the car revving a lot higher on motorways, fast A roads etc making it noisier with worse fuel consumption and probably lower top speed. On the plus side acceleration will be livelier thru the gears. The choice is yours.

Happen to have a spare JDM box and diff if you want them but a fair way off near Peterborough. Try http://www.scoobyteknixuk.com/ in Fleetwood, much closer to you.

hi thanks for the reply

ah, ok... yes I think the UK box route is best then it was lively enough through the gears and on fuel LOL

there's a few gearboxes on ebay around the £200 mark some a bit less
GradeA breakers wanted £500+ VAT!!! I can get a recon from "gears" for that price
gears also said it would cost £495 to recon my box but money is extremally tight ATM even so I'll have to chance a straight replacment.

I've emailed scoobytek as well to see what they say.

Certainly wouldn't pay plus £500 for a used box when you can have yours overhauled for that.

Scoobyteknix are the kiddys, have dealt with them before. Know Scoobys, professional, reasonable prices and will courier.

Are you planning to drop the gearbox yourself? If so have a look here

and good luck

I think I've found a box on ebay for £200 out of a 1998 UK car... so that looks best bet TBH, it's already out the car apparently.
If it all goes pear shaped I suppose I'd be able to take the good bits from that box to replace my broken reverse gear anyway... crossing fingers it will just be a straight replacment though.

I'll be doing it with a mechanic mate, he just points to the bolts and I undo them while he works above etc
I don't really have a lot of mechanic knowledge myself, but he is very good.
We only did the clutch last week!!!
Hardest bit with the box was not getting fingers squashed between the box and exhaust when wiggling it in and out and not getting oil dripped in my eyes out of the bit that meets the prop, a rubber glove worked enough while we dropped it onto our chests then pulled it out.

You only had the box out last week and suddenly no reverse??????

I would check the shifter linkage before dropping the box again.....
