I know that the version 5 and 6 STIs have the VF28 turbo. Today I was at a track day and there was an STI type R version 5 there. I asked the owner if he had upgraded to a bigger turbo and he said "No, it's got the standard turbo in it, the VF22". Was the type R's turbo different to the plain STI's turbo? I always thought they had the VF28.
Cheers,

To my knowledge (though i've not researched this specifically), the type R's had only VF28 Turbo.[1]
Normal 4 door WRX's had VF22's[1] as OEM but:
[1] Subaru have a habit of just bolting on whatever they have to hand on the production line I think.

Cheers Mike.
I was going to get stuck into him if he was wrong, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, cos maybe he got one where Subaru slapped on the VF22 on his car instead of the VF28. At least I can tell him his car is supposed to have a VF28.
