cover plate off an R180 rear diff?
Hi all,
Can you take off the rear plate that has the drain plugs in on an R180 rear diff without something falling out? I'd just like to flush the diff out completely and inspect all the gearing.

I get a funny feeling that you will have to drop the diff to completely inpect. I stand corrected if i'm wrong.
As the 2 securing bolts which go through the rear subframe are actually part of the diff cover, therefore you will have to undo these two big babies (they go through the grommet bushes) and as the studs are so long you will have to disconnect prop and rear shafts to get the diff to move back enough.
You can just see the long bolts i refer to on this picture>>>

Rats, not thought of that, will double check to see if I can see all of the R180 plate, if not, wont do it - prob cause more hassle/damage then worth...just change oil and if looks clean, leave it at that.
Cheers all.

just double nut and remove those studs then the cover will drop straight down - probably be a pig of a job no matter which way you do it
if on changing the oil there were none or little metal particles - i wouldnt bother with eyeballing it - unless you know something we dont - that its noisy / clunky / whiny / sounds like your missus etc etc

Well, my 6 speed is in real need of TLC with the usual 3rd and 5th gear crunch (no matter what oil used), also whiny (like my ex, constant!) and found out a while after buying the box and diff that it was from a group a rally car....hence thinking check rear diff although I've done an oil change on that and looked almost clean - I just cant tell where noise coming from when on motorway.
I'll prob pass now on rear diff and just do another oil change when get box fixed, see what shes like from there as getting the plate off doesn't sound easy. Cheers all.
